As per topic. Are they? I've only found one site listing vehicles that are exempt and it only states Fire Engines and Ambulances.

I don't think they are exempt per se, but they are placed in their own class for VED purposes and the rate is nil.

Girlfriend got pulled over for talking on her phone (which, yes, is stupid), however I noticed the police car had no tax disc. When I pointed out their disc was missing the first officer said "Oh, er, it probably just fell out" (which is odd seeing as they slide in from the top). The second officer then chirped up "We're exempt anyway mate".

A case of one rule for them, another for us?

I'm sure somebody more well informed will be along shortly, but as stated I don't *think* they are exempt - and that would mean their failure to display would be an offence.

Not sure that will do your GF any good though...

Well as we were waiting another police car stopped briefly and i noticed it had a tax disc with an expiry. The one that pulled her had nothing, just an empty holder.

I've phoned the police station and asked them myself. Apparently they have to display a tax disc as per any other driver on the road and if they aren't displaying tax it was suggested I report them to the DVLA as per any other vehicle without tax

They're vehicles of the crown or something. Ours have tax discs in them but I've never looked at the value on them. I'll have a butchers tomorrow and see what it is as I'm pretty sure theres no cost, although they have to still display a disc such as tax exempt vehicles etc.

Okay. So you're telling me that Police forces pay road tax for their vehicles? They don't by the way.....

I think you're getting a little confused....

They don't pay any VED but that doesn't mean they are exempt from VED regulations, just the band they are in has a nil charge levied.

All other hoops have to be jumped through.

it's still a requirement to display the disc as per any other exempt vehicle, to not do so is an offence as it would be for joe public. Are you suggesting the police should be above the law rather than lead by example?

Maybe I didn't make it clear. I actually stated in my first post that Police DO have to display a tax disc, but the point was that they DON'T pay tax, so it's purely to stop moaning gits (of which I'm in no way suggesting you are one.. wink)

He said earlier they still display them because of 'whinging idiots'. Had it been joe public not displaying his disc on his exempt vehicle they'd probably be stinging them for sixty quid, no?

Someone asked if we have tax discs, he said yes and went on a fishing trip and as usual the PH moaning massive jumped up and took the bait.

Take the hook out of your mouth.

It's not their car so they wouldn't pay for it anyway, hardly one rule for one and another for another

Police vehicles are exempt i.e. the rate is NIL.

Unless of course you want all police vehicles to pay road tax in which case I'm sure more would come from public coffers? Of course you'll whinge about that as well.

Also other vehicles such as RNLI, Mountain Rescue etc vehicles are exempt as well. Do you care to have a moan about that?

A question. Most nicks are short of vehicles. A car is found in the yard with no tax disc. It either hasn't been replaced, or it's fallen out, or the garage hand has taken it out for some reason. Would people rather the vehicle didn't leave the yard for days whilst a new disc is sorted out? Or, because tax isn't paid on it anyway, the vehicle leaves the yard onto the public road and benefits the community?
