RE: Rural Roads Targeted
Discussion

Mainstream US Media seem to be even more bent on sensationalism, emotional manipulation and fatuous rhetoric than the media here. Whether their stand predicates or influences the governmental and social attitudes is open for debate.
I think that the US political system, similar to here, is obsessed with 'being seen to do right' rather than doing what is actually in the best interest of the country. Often, 'being seen to do right' means taking action which will meet with the approval of a public who's appreciation of the deeper issues is simplistic to say the least.
The simplistic view is one which the media are largely responsible for purveying, though admittedly they merely satisfy a demand from an unenlightened public.
In all, I stand by my previously expounded opinions about the moral and social bankruptcy of America (elsewhere in these boards) and will avoid ever visiting the place irrespective of their speeding laws or any other thread of their judicial position.
Hurray CarZee!
That's exactly why I hate so much americans and the US in general...but failed to explain some months ago.
US laws.
As I understand it speed cameras are illeagal. There are however some red light cameras that take a picture from the front of the car, so as to have you in the shot too.
the reason I listed good and bad points about the US is that by no means do I find it perfect over here, but it definitely does have good points.
On the freeways of LA radar or laser traps are not used. too busy to distinguish between vehicles. However, on highways or more empty roads they will definitely use it.
One point on the US is that from what I understand its better to think of the US as many separate countries. I live in California, its nice here, and I have many intelligent american friends.
I've been to Texas and Florida and found them very different from california. In fact in those places I was scared to say that I'm not christian. (for the record religiously I'm in the "I just don't care" column)
Anyway, blanket statements about the US make about as much sense as saying all brits live in thatched cottages, tend to sheep, drive euroboxes, and work in the city of london.
all IMHO

Just imagine, speed humps, oops sorry, traffic calming measures, around every rural corner. Cheaper than camera but no revenue, just cost, so it will never happen.
That reminds me, I've been meaning to suggest this for weeks. When in general conversation the topics of cameras bumps etc occur. Referring to speed humps as "Stupid pointles speed humps" Traffic lights as "Traffic Jam Lights" and speed cameras as "revenue gathering speed cameras" , will eventually get the whole nation adopting this usage. Nothing travels faster than word of mouth. We always have a latest sentence filling phrase in current use. "PANTS", "At the end of the day". "Bottom line" etc . If we made a concerted effort to encourage ridicule to be heaped on the anti car strategy, then eventually the message will get home. Or am I just "off my trolley"?
In dorchester they have just spent somthing like £60,000 on speed bumps in fordington all because an mp owns the post office up there
you go for a drive on a A or B road in dorset you are bound to have a wheel ripped off by a large pot hole ,
when i complained about one to the council all i got was "sorry we dont have enough money to resurface the roads"
Should have had a go but i didnt .
how much does that crayola multi coloured tarmac cost that they seem to love these days ?

I know what you mean about Texas, but Florida? I'll have to email you a list of some "places" to visit next time you're in the State...

Agreed, whole heartedly. Judging a culture by it's media/political system is an excercise in futility. In fact, as a joke most americans refer to the evening news as "the bad news" because hardly anything else is broadcast. There is a huge difference between the people and "the system" (as this board shows)
Better to take people one at a time and form opinions based on personal experience with said person...
Also, regarding speed cameras. I don't think it is because of the 5th amendment against "self incrimination". The reason that they are not around is because the government knows they wouldn't last..
ie: Person gets ticket in mail. Person pays ticket (about $ 50 - $ 100) and then promptly goes to the camera with a chain saw and... government has to replace a several hundred dollar camera - not cost effective.
Just my opinion.
Cheers

Do you mean me or "Anton Szandor LaVey" ?
Both. Probably.
Actually if you take the time to read the book, a lot of it is rather good. I'll quote one of the bits I rather admire...
"if a man smite you on one cheek, SMASH him on the other"
Bit better than the old "turn the other cheek", eh??
And so much more applicable to todays environment.

But I come from Manchester, what does "smite" mean? Is it the same as Tw@tting someone?
I have heard that Meacher is going to be on "Any Questions" on Radio 4 this week (Friday night and repeated Saturday). It might be an idea to flood Radio 4 with questions (you can post them via the BBC website) asking Meacher what he thinks he's doing. Trouble is all the questions broadcast will be about Byers and the NHS I expect.
The original report is very alarming.
This will change peoples attitude alright. It'll Pi$$ them off even more. When will someone with a brain get into the transport department?

Changing drivers' attitudes to speed is a major priority. Following changes in attitudes a reduction in the national speed limit on single carriageway roads should be introduced. (Recommendation 64).
