A "friend in the pub" insists that VOSA have no power to stop you on the road. He says if they pull in front with the "Follow me" sign on you should ignore it.

What do you reckon?

We can only stop you for traffic management and safety purposes. We will stop you to clear debris, to protect the scene as we approach serious RTCs, to allow traffic management crews to put lane closures on for maintenance and to advise LGV drivers that they have an insecure load. We don't have enforcement powers, however VOSA do have enforcement powers and can hand out fixed penalties (but not for speeding or other motoring offences) VOSA will normally deal with LGVs, PCVs and other commercial traffic. Their remit is to check on tacho offences, vehicle defects, paperwork offences and other similar stuff. Hope this helps. wink

^ Thanks, that's more or less what I thought. I'll continue to accellerate away from them when I see a clear safe bit of road then smile

And hope that they weren't trying to stop you because you hadn't noticed that your vehicle had developed a fault and you might in danger, thus were thinking of your saftey?

Either that or they were planning to steal your dinner money! laugh

^You have a very vivid imagination, maybe you should write a children's book.

Anyway, you clearly don't understand what I meant. I sometimes come across them dawdling along when they leave motorways and go onto dual carriageways. Nice clear road, why should I dawdle along behind them? They have no interest in me and I wanted to ensure that I was clear as to their powers. Of course I'd stop if it was a safety related incident.

Now get back to your book writing smile

Earlier in the week I passed a van being looked over by a couple of VOSA inspectors on a small residential side road. Wasn't part of a police/DoT/VOSA check-point, just one VOSA Galaxy type thing. If they now searching for vehicles and pulling them at the road side, will they just be checking for road worthiness or will they be able to check MOT/insurance details?

Dunno but they're red hot on cars with trailers ATM. Watch your train weight!

Theyll be checking for safety and compliance. VOSA Galaxys will usually be found concentrating on HGVs though.

They concentrate on anyone they feel might be in an unroadworthy vehicle, cars are no exception. I think they had, or still are having, a purge on Land Rovers after the Muppet who modified his disco with dodgy brakes killed his kids (I think) a while back. No doubt next month it'll be something else, Toyotas maybe.
When I did an MOT course the guy running it said he was walking to work one morning and someone had stopped at the side of the road so he pulled him and went over his car, so they don't need to be in a vehicle to stop you.

They would call the police to stop you or they can report you for failing to stop.
