Not getting into the usual moan about the Police, but in the middle of your ticket will be an offence code and the offence written out. Can you tell me what this is please.

Driving with a space saver is not illegal, as long as it has the required tread, and you comply with the speed rating on the wheel. This will be next to the size on the tyre as a letter

This always makes me chuckle, as the max speed legal in the uk is 70 so what does the speed rating matter. Although I've had remoulds in the past that have max speed 60mph stamped on the side in the past, above about 65 they used to shed chunks of rubber !!!

I thought the 50 limit for a space saver came from C&U regs
Constr and Use regs said:
A temporary use spare tyre may be fitted to a wheel of a passenger vehicle (not being a bus) unless it is driven at a speed exceeding 50 mph.
AIUI it's due to the mixing of sizes etc on an axle.

Free advice, don't go to a company which you thought the thread was about, go to proper place.

:waits for incoming from people defending said company:

Don't care, completely unable to recommend them.

I am not usually one to step in and defend anyone, especially a company, but I have had the most excellent service from specsavers; regularly above and beyond the call of duty. I could not make a higher recommendation.

Must be very lucky with my local branch (Reading).

That's completely fair enough, glad you are happy. You must have found a good one, I must have found bad ones. <<(plural)

FWIW it'll fail an MOT with a space saver on.
You might be right, but my old Porsche passed with a space saver fitted a couple of years ago...

The very question came up on my MOT refresher course a few months ago, it definitely should be a fail. I'm not naive enough to think that every MOT tester gets it right though.

I did wonder. This was an earlier non-collapsing type though, silver and not too narrow, so perhaps it wasnt apparent?

Reg 27 (1) (a) MV Con and Use regs 1986 makes the requirement that a tyre has not to be unsuitable having regard to the use to which the motor vehicle is being put or to the types of tyres fitted to the other road wheels.

Sub Para (3) of Reg 27 states: Para 1 (a) above does NOT PROHIBIT the use on a road a passenger vehicle (not being a bus) by reason only of the fact that a wheel of the vehicle is fitted with A TEMPORARY USE (not defined)spare tyre unless the vehicle is driven in excess of 50mph.

No distance mentioned.

One wonders what the instructions about the 'space saver tyre' are give in the vehicle handbook. If they say get home only then does one consider in the events mentioned ^^^^^^ is Plod elastically considering parts and accessories in such condition as likely to cause danger??????

Easy for me to say: but I think that the OP should elect to go to court.

After FiFs glowing report, I'm not too sure we should all go to Specsavers...!readit

I didn't take too much convincing - they are too interested in "fashion" for my liking...

Alright if you spend your life peering through letterboxes I suppose!

Interesting points on the space saver tyres - at the moment I've got a space saver on my vehicle. My tyre went flat on boxing day, day after I called a few garages up for a replacement tyre - give them the size and details of the tyre - kept getting told that because my existing tyres were re-enforced run-flat tyres they can't get replacements till at least new year.

Ordered some online to see if they'd get here faster - but even they had to order them from Germany (do we not make tyres in the UK anymore - or is it because I've got a Merc - or is it the run flat thing - have to admit was glad of the run flat as the tyre itself suffered a major puncture and went very quickly flat when coming down a hill - it just went from normal driving one minute to a weird noise from the back and then quite a lot of skidding/ESP light coming on) But I'm like what do I do I've got work in Cheltenham on NYD which is about 60 miles away (so 120 mile round trip), I'm going to hold out and hope the tyres do arrive early from Germany as there is a garage round here that said they'll fit it on NYE for me if they arrive by then.

The space saver at the moment is on the drivers rear side.

My owners manual, Jaguar, states that you should drive with caution and replace with the specified wheel and tyre as soon as possible. Also states the maximum speed of 50mph.

What car ?

On a FWD car that's correct, on a RWD car the space saver goes on the front.

Check your owners manual just to be safe.

I hope your tyres turn up quicker than your reply on this thread!

Because you're not restricted to driving in the UK, and there are places in the UK where you can drive as fast as you wish.
