Bloody hell that was wet.

I'm off to Anglesea for the first time next month for a Javelin trackday. I've still not really had the chance to track the Caterham in the wet, so I'm praying for some dry weather!
yeh it wasnt good !! even on the Cr500s it wasnt horrendous though , if you took it easy it was predictable, think you would have to be unlucky for it to be as bad as that again, shame as its a fantastic track in the dry I wish you well with the weather !

Your driving impresses me a lot Jeff, in regards to that a,d some of your other vids on YouTube, in my short 550 miles of learning to extract the performance from my track Caterham I hope I appear to have such a relaxed manner at the wheel . . . Obviously I don't currently hehe , but maybe one day ! Years of driving the Griffith isn't the best prep, here's one lap from Snetterton, just the 3rd Trackday since I'd finished re-building it, trying to keep up with one of the R300 racers. Not so sure about my open wheel now either, not when I did grab fresh air, great for seeing the display as I continue run in the engine, but no great when I needed the top to be there for some extra opposite lock biggrin

Ha cheers Johno , I feel im to old to be driving at 10/10ths now and tend to just go out steady away to enjoy myself driving on track and have some fun in the process , theres no prizes on trackdays as they say and after approaching 10 years of doing trackdays and racing its still always a relief for me to get the car back on the trailer in 1 piece !! .

not sure If if put this video up on here, its an old one from 2008 it doesnt end so well but its had the most views out of all my vids and the most comments (some people really are idiots!)rolleyes

Jeff...was also there at Angelsey (Orange R400 + 2 other 7's) ... ended up spending most of the day in the cafe ... when on track ... I was overtaken by everything ! Never experienced a track so wet or slippery...but then my CR500's are now due to be changed + I was driving home not trailering (200 miles).

Hi Steve yeh was a bloody wet one! I actually thought the track was ok for grip and found the Cr500s pretty predictable but they were new, not fantastic in terms of traction but I knew what they were going to do , couple of my pals were on Toyo 888s in medium compound and both had far more grip than I did. So all the bks Ive read on forums about 888s being poor in standing water is fiction ! I had a set of toyos on this car up until a few months ago and found them much grippier than the Avons in all condition . anyway after my pal aquaplaned and binned his car into the back of a slower car we decided to call it a day and hit the road home!

Ps were you at Anglesey August last year ? theres an Orange R400 in one of my vids in front of a Supercharged Duratec I was chasing.

No not me...our first trip to Angelsey...5 of us (4 * 7's + an Elise)... all live in the South East and do one away weekend a year as a boys trip. Would definitely do Angelsey again and hope for dry weather as it looked like an interesting track for a 7 in the dry, especially the afternoon session when they opened up the corkscrew. For our weekends we've done Le Mans Bugatti, Abbeville, Oulton, Cadwell, Pembrey & Spa. Who knows for next year ! I'm voting to go back to Cadwell or Oulton. We'll see !

Track day was a washout but the drive up through Snowdonia on Saturday was perfect ! We had a dry Tuesday morning for the run back through central Wales....but then the rain came in again. Nightmare on the motorways for the final trek home !

Goodwood Sprint from Saturday. Won my class in the Phoenix with a 90.91sec run beating my good friend Stephen Laing in his R500 by 5 secs. Top speed on the approach to Woodcote was 148 on the GPS datalogger

I'm quite intrigued about this!

I've just bought a set of 13s to use on trackdays and was planning on putting CR500 on them (I've got CR500s on my 15s now) as I was intending to use them to get to trackdays as much as I was intending to use them on trackdays.

Are you saying that 888's could be a better option? I thought the CR500s were meant to be brilliant in the wet in comparison to the others?

yeh everything I read suggested the same, but Im not convinced that those preaching have actually back to backed them , I think its the usual forum scenario , one person says it then it gets repeated so all of a sudden it must be true , FWIW I"ve run 888s for the last 10 years and I personally think they are fantastic in all conditions , In the dry the only tyre I"ve used that is quicker is a Kumho V70 and over a dry lap it was only a couple of tenths,(but not good in the wet!) I have heard the latest Avon zzrs are even better in the dry and I have heard that from people that have raced and tested on them, also been told they are better in the damp than what they look like they are going to be, as they are as close to a road going slick that you will get !!

Anyway my experience which lead to my comment above, my current R500 spec car had Cr500s on and last year I did a wet trackday at Blyton on them, 2 of my pals in 7"s were running 888 toyos and straight away I was struggling against them, they were taking lumps of time out of me through the corners and on the brakes there was eye site in it. when the track dried the difference was more so the Cr500s were squirmy (more fun?) but eventually overheated . I Presumed I must just have a bad set after everything I had read about how good they were in the wet and standing water.

So, I ditched the Avons and I fitted new 888s to my car and straight away wet and dry grip was much improved as I expected , happy days you would think? NO , there is a the down side to running the 888s on the road, which is the ride of the car compared to the Cr500s, within 100 yards it felt different and not good different , the tyres are heavier as the side walls are soooooo thick/ stiff that it felt harsh and soon as I run a cats eye the car thudded and I found it now tram lined . As my car is now mainly for road use, for me it killed the drive and I couldn't live with it, I found myself not wanting to drive it to go on a run round the back roads frown so I bit the bullet and bought another new set of Cr500s ,(again hoping I had a bad set last time) straight away ride was much better , no thudding on bumps, dry grip was noticeably worse, the Toyos would but the power down even in first gear where the Cr500s will spin right through second gear when the car comes on cam, I can live with that on the road,

So.. next time on track was the Anglesey video above and rain was torrential, the car felt ok on them, It moved around a lot but I didnt have any moments, was very predictable and I would say better than the older set I had previous but my pal that I was chasing in his Caterham on 888s certainly had more grip than I did both on brakes and through the corners we both noticed it.

If I was having a spare set of rims for track tyres for wet and for dry I defo wouldnt fit Cr500s, for me it would be 888s or perhaps try the ZZRS and report back, I would be interested to know what they are like smile

oh and apologies for the thread drift !
