As for area meetings - that's not the same - the ARs don't receive any funding from the club for those.
That's precisely the type of events I'm talking about. Free, yet often cited as a benefit of (fee-paying) membership.

You clearly think that area meetings don't take any organising and that a persons time spent in organising a time, date, venue, agenda etc. isn't worth anything. I can't speak for others, but the area meeting I attend is in a private area of a pub solely for the use of the L7C members and guests. Yes the area meeting is a social event where members will chat and enjoy each others company, but at every meeting there will be a small formal part when announcements are made on up coming events, members will report on progress of arrangements for events they are organising. The Area Rep will relay information to the membership about any national Lotus 7 Club happenings etc
As our next meeting is February it will have more formal content as we solicit members ideas for events and discuss our 2013 calendar.
P.S. as a non member you won't be welcome.

Happy to report my second L7C saving - I'm having my car Armourfended and didn't realise that I can save 10% (£40) because I'm a member, so that's my annual subs nearly saved in one go, and that's before I've even had my car delivered ! The first saving was on my insurance so subs well and truly covered.

As if to prove a point, it was another L7C member who advised me about the discount. thumbup Membership works for me, so far.

Happy weekend all. beer

The ARs in my neck of the woods simply post on FB when the next meeting is, and whilst it does take time and effort, I don't subscribe to the idea that a club membership fee off sets that, because it just doesn't. People have repeatedly said you get out what you put in. I'm sorry to say the bits I "get out" of the club are those areas and types of event which are cost-free to the club as an organisation. Granted there's indiviudal's time and effort, but since the membership fee does not and cannot "pay" for that the membership fee strikes me as a one-way arrangement. So am I taking advantage of those people who plan things? Go on, leap to a Daily Mail conclusion and say yes, because the truth is I too have planned events using my own time and my own effort but I'm not so small minded as to expect anything more than the enjoyment of others as payment. It's called give and take and transcends any financial arrangments.
Based on your notion though, where do I send the invoice for my time?
"I can't speak for others" - don't then, because your area meeting is nothing like the ones I've been to which have been , basically, blokes in a pub car park.
"as a non-member you won't be welcome" - Congratlations. That has to be the best advert ever to those who are considering joining and simply want to come along to a meeting for a look-see.

Anyhow, what this thread has done is firmly concrete my intention to leave the club.
Instead of a genuine debate it's descended in to the usual "Well fk you then" replies.

I didn't speak for others I told you what happened at the area meeting I attend.

You miss the point. All prospective members are made very welcome. I said that YOU (as a non member who has stated that they are no longer going to pay a subscription) won't be welcome.

There are many members of the Lotus 7 club who enjoy it and get lots from it. You've experienced the club and what it has to offer and it doesn't do it for you. We all have a limited disposable income and can choose to spend it how we wish and where we feel we will get best value. Good luck to you in whatever you do decide to spend your money on. Perhaps in the future as things change you may feel the Lotus 7 Club has something to offer. Whatever, I hope you continue to enjoy your 7.

As the title really... I've been thinking of joining but fail to see any major benefits of doing so other than 10% or so off here and there and magazine and £50 is pretty steep! - can anyone convince me otherwise

......which I'd already said was nothing like the meetings I'd been to so nt really grounds for comparison.

Not at all. Openly stating that anyone is "not welcome" at your meetings is hardly a good advert for the club. There are other, far more tactful ways of putting it without sounding quite so much like Captain Mainwaring.

Bored now.

In Answer to the OPs question - NO
I've watched this thread deteriorate into the usual BC format of the BC Bully boys attempting to put down anyone who dares to disagree with their point of view - Well done to 'CROSSFLOW KID' For saying his piece, [this would have been removed from BC] by the BC forum administrators.
SO Well done to PH for allowing CK's free speechthumbup
The L7 need to change. Only way forward is to remove all the Unelected members on the L7 club M team, and have annually elected officials, Like almost every other car club does.
They also need to look after the ordinary members better, the memebershio fee ought to be spent for the benefit of members, not left to languish in a bank account, last time I read about this there was a huge 5 figure amount of £'s in their bank account, surely members pay a fee and this ought to be spent entirely for all members benefits.
The Low flying mag is crap, way to many adverts and no meaty or usefull articles at all.
Well I've said my bit, and I'm sure plenty may disagree, So to those who disagree be constructive in your criticism.
>
To the OP I suggest you join a local Kit/sports car club where you will be sure of a warm welcome from real petrolheads, and where the joining fee will be much less and you'll get far more benefit and enjoyment from your 7.

I was waiting for S4z to put his oar in. He doesn't sctually know how the club is run and he clearly has no idea how any other clubs are run. He also has no business sense either and the concepts of working capital and risk mitigation are also anathema to him.

But in reality, all this thread is doing is providing those embittered people to have their say. Again.

Mods..time to close the thread?

@orangeknight, I would say yes it's worth joining. Generally the club's great and Blatchat has been a lot more peaceful and less fractious of late.

I think to answer the OP its a personal choice, I have had 7s for approaching 10 years and have owned Caterhams for the last 5 years ,I know quite a few people that are members that I see at trackdays and race meetings and most are a good bunch, Ive read posts on blatchat for years but I have never fancied joining , Its not a money thing, (ive just joined the westfield forum again despite not owning one for 5 years!) I find with forums there is always the odd person you will have a difference of opinion with but the problem I have with BC is for me there are too many keyboard warriors on there that I think would rub me up the wrong way, when I had Porsches I thought exactly the same of Porsche forums the one on here is a prime example! full of as my dad used to call them half educated 10 bob millionaires , thats my reason for never joining oh and I dont think my spelling or punctuation would be anything like up to scratch!

as for value insurance discounts are available through other car clubs ~(I got discount last 10 years through wscc ) and any other discounts I want I simply negotiate them its tough and everyone will do a deal and often more than what car clubs get.
