This is my first post on Piston Heads . We have just got hold of a bare chassis and box's of bits ,to which I am putting back together . My Problem ...... Where does the handbrake go ? We have a handbrake lever which looks like the correct one from the Caterham parts list . and I believe the early ones were under the dash but there are no holes for it to go in . The car was used for hill climbs and once belonged to Lawrence Hoy ,If anyone knows the car, please contact me .

What a shame the "Hoyabusa" seems to have been broken up frown
Good luck getting it back to its former glory.
Sorry I can't help with your handbrake dilema.

O.K. I'm pretty sure it should be under the passenger side dash, but an expert should be along soon.
We like pictures... wink

Hi Mick . Do you know this car? I'm no idiot but I cant see where any fittings have been on the chassis and no hole on the top or side of the tunnel . We have just a gear lever shroud . We have a handbrake lever ,which is the early version but no where for it to go . And as yet I haven't seen any illustration of early fittings .

OK, so the holes are often not drilled unless the handbrake has actually been fitted.

If you can find someone with a pre-1996 build manual (handbrake moved to the tunnel in 1996), this will be documented, but essentially there are two bolts hold the handbrake to the chassis.

In the photo below you will see them in the middle of the red circle.

To drill them you need to mark their position by putting a drill bit through the hole in the chassis rail underneath the scuttle. Access is from the footwell, the square section tube.

If memory serves me right the holes are not tapped, so once you find the correct sized drill bit, you can drill through the aluminium panel from underneath.

Simple, but only if you knew it was there!

The handbrake sits horizontally on the left hand side under the flat part of the scuttle. Positioned laterally. From inside the engine bay if you look at the base of the vertical scuttle panel where it meets the horizontal panel right out to the left side of the chassis here will be two holes, one larger may be 10mm and one smaller around 6mm if my memory serves. These go through the one inch box section at that point that runs laterally across from the side panel right across he car. On a race car the alloy panel may not have holes drilled so from inside he car looking up from the footwell you should be able to see them.

Thanks Guys ... How bizarre .I have seen some funny places for handbrakes over the years ,but I have never seen one there .I'll have a look for a Pre 96 Build Manual . But could you tell me where the cables are run .I know where they end in the tunnel but its the single cable that s got me . I have seen a large hole on Transmission tunnel on the upper passenger side which I suspect the cable goes through . Thanks for that Picture ,I think without that I wouldn't have believed it

The cable runs straight up the transmission tunnel and into the pedalbox. Hard to see on the photo as that particular chassis does not have a pedalbox for the passenger. I'd get someone to take a few pics, or visit a L7C meeting (you don't have to be a member) and take some snaps yourself.

Having watched that vid I recognise the gear lever knob as I bought a 6 speed box that was his and it came fitted.
