Does anyone have a picture and spec sheet for the original Caterham Superlight? The 1.6 K-Series powered one circa 1996, with no paint etc. Google searches have failed to produce anything older than the R300.

I'm trying to prove to someone that it did exist!

Cheers

James

Did you find this site? http://www.thecaterhamregister.net/superlights.htm
Mine's car 32 and if you look at car 38 it's about as close as possible to the basic Superlight spec. Most had a lot of options added as the hardcore spec wasn't universally liked. The original owner of mine ordered it with leather seats, windscreen , heater and spare wheel!
From memory - the basic spec was:
1.6 Supersport engine (133bhp)
6 speed gear box
LSD
wide track front suspension
adjustable spring platforms
AP 4 pot front brakes with vented discs
fibre glass bucket seats
no paint
no trim
aeroscreen in lieu of windscreen
various carbon bits (front wings, nosecone and dash, possibly rear wings but the number of carbon bits changed over the years)
ACB10 tyres

Thanks for adding this article Ian. Interesting that paint comes in at 2.5kg and weather equipment at 16ish. For those sensible people who ordered the standard Superlight spec it must have been a very special car.

Is the driver on page 7 in a hurry to get to a prayer meeting, or did his Mum put his hat on a hot wash? smile

K16 TOY used to belong to Pie Boy

The first customer 1600 Superlight belonged to Tony Fergusson, but he sold it after a few years. Highly polished ally.

There was a full Autocar Road Test of it. You may be able to download a copy from their archives.

Was the original Superlight the lightest Caterham? In which case, does it make it the lightest car engined car of all time?

I think the original R500 was lighter owing to the addition of magnesium bellhousing and wheels .

I had a bare carbon/ali Superlight, probably the one Caterham I missed the most out of the 5 I owned.

I think mine was on a T plate (no idea on build number) but mine was slightly unusual in that it was ordered new with a 1.8 engine rather than the 1.6.

Wonder where it is now?

I had a superlight as my 1st ever Caterham. I foolishly test drove it as a standard factory spec car (aero screen, plastic seat (pre tillets) no heater.

I then had leather seats, screen and heater added.....oh the mistakes of youth and a novice seven owner!!!
