You might have read in a previous post that I'm having what I thought was K-click issues.

I've just changed the starter motor and can now hear the solenoid operating but the car still fails to do anything and I'm stumped!

The battery (off the car) is giving 12.75v and if I bump it the car runs fine.

Any ideas!?

HELP!!!

Put a jumper cable from the neg battery terminal, and onto a good grounding point on the engine block.
If that fixes it, you have a bad ground connection somewhere.

Right, car runs ......but only after a jump.

The battery was down to 9.6v when jumped it was showing 13.9v with the engine running.

Goosed battery me thinks!?

Further to my last post.....with the engine running I should be seeing around 13.5 - 14 volts at the battery terminals to prove a working alternator - am I correct?

Okay, battery has been charged and is showing 13.16V on the meter.

Put it on the car and try to start, starter motor solenoid fires and whirs, that's it!

Jump the car through the battery via a mates car and it fires up first turn of the key!

Can a battery show the voltage but still not have the grunt to turn the car over?

Once again I'm at a loss here!

Yup! Take it into Halfords, they have a very trick Bosch battery analyser which'll probably tell you that one or more of your cells is goosed.

Thanks very much to all of you for your help and advice.

I'll get the battery checked at Halfords today if I can get away.

You could also try putting a volt meter cross the battery when you try and turn it over, if the volts drop from 12 then battery is dead.

When you say you changed the battery, was it a new battery?

No, it was the battery that was on the car when I bought it, far from new I suspect!

Sounds like you need to replace the battery.

Don't bugger about, buy a new one. Job done for a couple of years. Or more if you keep it on a maintenance charger.

Dodgy batteries throw up all sorts of odd symptoms, and you'll waste hours chasing them.

Check all your grounding points, and live terminals while you're at it. Take them off clean them up, and spray them with some corrosion inhibiter, or paint them with liquid neoprene.

And don't forget some happy fat on the battery terminals (Vaseline wink )

A new battery it is!!

I think the best deal I can find is Tanya at £54 + postage for an original fit Banner.

Any better options?

44€ here in Germany:
http://www.batterie24.de/Motorrad-Intact-Bike-Powe...

Or 49€ (perhaps they will deliver to the UK)
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Batterie-fuer-Aufsitzmaeher...

Maybe I should start selling these on ebay UK?
