So, after only 875 miles, the speedo in my Sigma 1.6 Roadsport 125 has decided to give up the ghost!

There had been a little 'flickering' between 60 and 70, but it was pretty accurate otherwise. Then, after a 40 mile A road cruise and a two hour stop, it decided not to work. It "wakes up" on ignition and the odo lights up, but then it goes back to rest and stays there, very occasionally rising a bit, wavering about for a couple of seconds (without any real indication of the actual speed) then promptly dropping back to rest.

I've checked the wires at both ends, and the sensor seems pretty solid (and nothing would have jolted it on the drive or while parked up). Without shifting the sensor around, does anyone have any ideas what it could be - or should I just start adjusting the sensor gap and see what happens?

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks,

Tom

Hi - I'd rule out a fault with the sensor first - you should be able to see an LED at the end flash as the wheel/hub rotates and magnetic pulse registers as the teeth pass near the tip

If no LED visible, adjust gap and also check for damage to the wire around A frame bit

The sensor cable is the weak point, particularly on a new car if it hasn't had enough cable to allow it to move freely with the suspension. Do the LED check, but I suspect you'll need to replace/repair the sensor. Repair is possible if you're handy with a soldering iron.

It's probably not the sensor.

I've just had the same problem with my new C7 ..... it is a design fault for the Speedo Earth connection. The guys in the workshop know it well and can easily fix.

As a test, see if your speedo reading is impacted when you put your brake lights and indicators on ... if yes then it is the earth point that needs changing.

The guys at Caterham Midlands fixed mine during the 1st service.

Does that mean they put it back to what it should be?

That's what they told me they did, but it means it's back to working again!
