Hi all just looking for a little advice .... ive had a couple of older Caterhams over the years but never a newer type K series engined one and just wondered what thoughts were on the bright Orange one that Baker Brothers of Surrey have advertised at the moment.
It doesnt look to exspensive and if it doesnt have a heated screen fitted can one be fitted at a later date?
Is it harder or more exspensive to get insurance as it has a Q plate?
Should this Caterham have a LSD as standard ..
Any advice would be appreciated as its been a while since I have jumped into one!!
Thanx Mark

This one http://www.bakerbrothers.co.uk/used-cars/caterham-...

Looks interesting, I don't know whether insurance would be any different, I wouldn't expect it to be. I wonder why it is a Q plate, thats a bit unusual for this age? And it will be holding the value down a bit. If the rebuild has been done well it could be a lovely car. LSD wouldn't have been standard on a Roadsport and I'm pretty sure if it had one it would be stated in the advert as it make a bit of difference to many people. I'd want to know what they've done to get the >160 bhp as there are no pictures of the engine bay and it still has the standard exhaust with under bonnet manifold (which is quite restrictive and often an early part of any upgrade journey). It needs to be seen to really offer any advice, the photo's don't give much away (e.g. can't tell if the suspension has adjustable platforms, can't see what the engine is like). Pretty looking car and could be great but a few things don't quite sit right in my mind - Q plate (why?), recent rebuild (why?), non standard wheels, no mention of how the engine has been modified. As a modified 1999 Roadsport it sounds a little expensive, but if the rebuild has been done well and all the spec is as good as it sounds then it could be on the money.

I saw this and in my opinion I would advise caution.

If you read the text this is a car used by a sports car rental company, which has been rebuilt and covered 1800 miles since the rebuild. It must therefore be assumed there is additional mileage the seller does not want to disclose in the ad. You could call the compnay quoted in the ad - http://www.sevenhire.co.uk/index.html to get more info.

The second thing here is that a K-Series engined car would have been sold by Caterham after 1993 which is after car sales tax (10%) was abolished. There would have therefore been no incentive to register it as a Q. The fact this car is stated as 1999 and is on a Q plate is extremely odd.

Here are some reasons a newer car could be on a Q plate:

An older Pre 1993 car which has had the engine changed from (probably Xflow) to a K-Series

Not supplied as a complete car by Caterham (with Certificate of Newness) and when registered the then owner did not have the required documentation to prove all parts were new.

Also it could be possible to take a car which has been written off as Cat B, stamp a new chassis number on and re-register it on a Q Plate.

I am not implying any of the above applies to the car in question, but I am giving you an idea of possible reasons.
