.... (should I fit a Tracker) to my brand new Seven 160 which is due for collection mid November this year.)cool Apologies if this topic has been raised before (it probably has) though I have searched a little way through the Caterham forum pages (though not very far). Is it the case that because the Caterham is a fairly small car and quite basic that it would be difficult to hide a tracker? Would the scrotes/weasels, (with the greatest respect to the animal - weasel) take the car, ie even lift the car on to a low loader, and in no time take it apart till they find a tracker and discard it, or would it be a real deterrent to them when faced with a sticker saying ''Tracker Fitted'' -- is even this sign recommended?
If you guys and girls think a tracker is a good idea, then which one please, I used to have one fitted to a Jag years ago by the firm, 'Tracker', since the Jag was never taken I have no idea how good the unit would have been but think by the firms reputation, general efficiency and advice about security to it's customers it would have been good. Any thoughts would be much appreciated, thanks, Tony.

It is a good question, and I don't think it has been asked before (at least in the Caterham section).

My feeling is the a Caterham is not that attractive to the professional car thief. They just stand out too much and are too difficult to sell without being noticed by the Caterham community. If it is stolen, it'll be for parts, or just a joy ride, and as you say, the ability to hide a tracker is limited. The chances are you wouldn't want it back anyway.

Just get a sticker made up and dont actually fit one.

Battery master switch and QR MOMO ? - that should be enough if you have them fitted.

Give me PM if you want a sticker - its what i do.

Hi most definately fit something, very easy to hide, I've had Cossies bikes 2 7's trust me it's awful losing something I've used Tracker and Acutrac both are very good the latter is user managed both have got my kit back, if you need any prompting just read the stolen pages on PH to see what goes and where from, if they want your pride and joy they will get it trust me. I think gone are the days for just joy riding then torching it, they go for breaking and racing/tracking, and now that the morons have decided not to do the VIC checks anymore Ringing will become very prolific again!! there is an element of peace of mind too when your out n about park up go for a wonder around knowing that if you get someone messing about you get an alert.

Doh! If you fit a Tracker Sticker everyone will know you don't have a Tracker its like marking a car with an X ! The whole point of a Tracking device is that they are stealthily installed

As pointed out they will just take it if they want it

Fit something,it's 100% better than nothing, dead easy to hide on a Caterham, all I can say is every system is beatable every system has it's short falls, Tracker got my R1 bike back TWICE! and a movement alert found my 7 3 streets away at 3am, as thats what the pros do move the car and wait to see if someone turns up in a couple of hours, IE turn up it's trackered no show off they go!!Except the last time the bike went the van was followed and other gear was recovered too.

On a lighter note....car thieves like a qwick getaway,,,, when I jump into my Caterham as im a newish owner ive got to find the red key saftey cut out ( hidden under the dash) and insert that, then touch immobiliser transponder then juggle around to find ignition switch under the dash, all this after having juggled about to remove the aftermarket steering wheel lock thingy!!....... 10 minutes later im nearly ready to go ..oopps forgot to put my full harnesses on and clip the door studs into place ..ohhhhh dont belive it the bloody immobiliser has rearmed itself cause ive taken so long!!! Oh forgotten to put my gloves and hat on now and my glasses to stop all the dust blowing into my eyes!!
No seriously I think tracking device good idear ive been meaning to fit one in my Noble but Caterhams such a pain in the arse to nick I dont think I would bother!!

Is theft a real problem for Caterhams? I get bikes because they're low effort and easy to sell on. BMWs/Mercs - more effort but high returns when you flog the bits in Nigeria. I would have hoped Caterhams were too niche to draw much interest but perhaps I'm wrong.

All I can say is that when it's gone it's gone, have a taste of it and you will understand, I've lived in S Yorkshire and had a Cossy (yes they tried)I've lived in Bigginhill and lost an ST170 not Trackered ermmm didnt get around to it, now west London the 7 is garaged but one week I used it 3 days to go to work the 2nd night they moved it 3 streets away at 3 AM as they do if they think it's trackered 30 mins later I'm stood by it due to a movement alert waiting for the filth who turned up at 7AM!!!
Any system is not 100% but it would have gone, just imagin that feeling!!! have a look at the stolen pages on PH!!

Don't bother unless your insurance insists on it (increasingly unlikely).

If scumbags manage to take it away, you won't want it back. Just make sure your insurance covers agreed replacement costs (and fit battery cut off and removable wheel and take them out of the car with you).

Would you not have been better off hiding & following the fockers when they come to get it later..? Then they´d have been caught at least and hopefully punished...

well, I would say no, previous owner had it installed on my car, its been a good seven years I only realised that when i noticed a recent battery drain ....took it too so many places and they cannot pin down source of amp loss, but they bet its tracker, alas car is no longer uk based so cant get em to come have a look, and their response to my letters and emails has been less than forthcoming when it comes to giving me a hint of its location...although i noticed in rear of the X5 near fuse panel some 'aftermarket; insulated wires that i have yet to trace.....

Interesting question, I've had my 7 for 11 years and never considered a tracker, neither have any of the many other owners that I've met (to the best of my knowledge). I don't think they are targetted particularly (I know one one that was stolen but I think they were after the trailer it was on!). I suppose it depends on the opportunity you present - mine is locked up in the garage for almost all the time and it is very rarely left in public overnight so it's a risk I accept. If it does go then insurance should sort it and it is easily replaced.
