Having just bought a K series 125 bhp roadsport, I got to wondering if there was any reason why the 160 bhp engine from a mg zr 160 couldn't be used to replace the existing engine? Sounds too simple which means I'm sure there will be an issue!!

A ZR 160 was a 1.8 Turbo was it not? If that is correct, there is your answer.

Nah, 1.8 VVC, same as the MGF Trophy.

You can fit the 160VVC, but you will need a new offside engine mounting to lower the plenum to prevent interference with the bonnet, you will also need the ECU/Immobilisor and engine loom. The block will need modifying to clear the Caterham starter and adaptor and crank will need a spigot bearing and sleeve. If your engine is a 1600 then the first motion shaft may need shortening a little to fit the crank. You will need to transfer over the sump, oil pickup and flywheel/clutch from the existing engine. If the donor engine is from an MGF then you will need to transfer the dipstick and tube from the current engine too.

yep - I had a 1600 ss s**t itself and rather than replace with the same thing I got the engine, ecu, loom, keys etc. from a mgf trophy - same as the rover 25 trophy.

AFAIK - it needs no more modification than if you got any other k series motor.

A bit of the block needed shaving off for the starter but I think they all do!

IMHO - perfect engine for the car and basically the same as the non throttle bodied R300's.

The project starts! Bought an MGZR 160 for £250, have liberated the cylinder head which has gone off to be checked out, the plan is to fit it to my 1.8 K, along with loom ecu and immobiliser from the donor. Hopefully will have a 160 hp motor for a few hundred quid (and a spare bottom end to boot with the stronger pistons for future upgrades).
