Has anyone got experience of the standard set up of an R400 fresh from the factory?

My old K series was well sorted, so hoping for the same

So why not ask the Factory?

Both of my R500 Duratecs came back from the factory setup with woeful understeer and far too much rake.

On my previous white car i took it to Fauldsport, and Stuart did a great job of the flat floor set up.

For my current R500, i took it to McMillan motorsport in Hinkley, and they did a great job.

I think you are Midlands based, so McMillan might be a good local choice, but any of the other guys would be a good choice, so I would get it set up by one of the reputable Caterham Motorsport teams, they always seem to do a better job than the factory std set up.

Hi Nigel,

You are correct, I'm based near Rugby.

Thanks for the tip too - bookmark added. My last car, I had the widetrack suspension fitted by caterham midlands, and they did a really good job too - though if I have the same experience as you, I'm not handing Caterham any more cash to sort it out.

Another massive thumbup for McMillan Motorsport. I had my car flat-floored there late last year and it's made a significant improvement smile

You need to have a think about what tyres you are running and what sort of use you are going to put the car to . A great track set up might not be the best for the road .

My car was set up initially with 4 degrees negative camber and quite a bit of toe out . It was epic on the track but on the road I never loaded up the front tyres enough so they wore excessively on the inside edge . I am now running 2.5 negative which some would say is still quite a lot but the problem is much reduced .

Tyres also have a bearing , the ZZR for instance likes more negative C than the cr500 .

The race teams reccomended above will definitely help but be clear with your brief .

Oh , And do you want the fronts perfectly balanced or the corner weights averaged around ?!!! Problems , problems !!

I had the set up on my old car at 1.5 deg camber, and that was spot on for my purposes.

I do 3-4 trackdays, and touring/blatting

I used Chris at Center Gravity in Atherstone, Warks.

Google them and see what PistonHead members say about his fastidious approach, knowledge & results.

I got there at 9.00am and left at 11.30pm !!!

P.S. There must be something wrong with him as I thought I had OCD where my R300 is concerned but this guy is in a different league.

I always used Hyperion. But I'd use Stuart Faulds if he's still operating. It is certainly the best expenditure one could make

Stuart is indeed still working on Caterhams. He does a couple of days a week for us (BookaTrack) at our workshops at Donington Park - mainly working on customer cars and occasionally rebuilding ours for us when clients do their best to shorten them. We keep him pretty busy, but always available to schedule work in if you wanted to get in touch.

Like Nige and Grant I used McMillan, great bunch of guys. Did a very thorough job and really sorted my recently acquired R500. Very happy biggrin

Fortunately I used them before with my Superlight 1.6K so I don't need to pay Nige any money tongue out

You don't owe me any money at all buddy!

The guys at Millwood paid me a handsome commission after you bought your R500 from them on my recommendation!

Not too bad! Thanks John!

Yes we must get something organised!

All we need is the weather to get better first!

I woke up this morning to bright sunshine and blue sky's at 07:00, and as the kids were away last night I though, great I will take the R500 out.

Come round to now at 08:30 and guess what, lashing it down again!

As they said we have has the sunniest winter for 80 years! Yeah right!
