After owning and loving an R400d I decided to sell it with the intention of buying an R500d. In the mean time I found out I was going to be made redundant so I decided not to look for an R500d.

However, the urge is too strong!

I really miss that R400 and should not have sold it. Anyway..........does anyone know of any nice manual R500d's coming up for sale with a screen and heater at a sensible price I.e. not a Caterham price.

What about this one: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/c...

That's a very good spec car, but it's not actually an R500.

That's not an issue if you are willing to keep the car, and that's the resin the price is very competitive.

However the problem will be when. It comes time to resell it, as it is not a genuine R500, which will be an issue for a lot of potential owners.

The only items that seem to me missing though, are the Stack instruments and the soft touch switches. So not a major issue!

That is the sort of thing I am after but I am after a genuine R500, am I right in saying this is not? It has kit engine parts and a 5 speed box.

Sevens and classics '263' car which is jeffc's old car is nice but it's not worth what they are asking, jeffc sold it for a lot less and so did the last owner, I missed it!

It appears that dealers hold 90% of the cars and consequently they are over inflating the price of all cars. I bought and sold my last R400 at a lot less than any of these cars are.

I am thinking a new 420r at £40k might be the way to go!!!

Very true, however it's certainly got the performance (skip to 0:37) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm0Q0ck0IUo&li...

My old car is also more than 263 bhp wink however it looks like its sold now? anyone on here bought it ? was a fantastic car and went very well but as mentioned above it was not a factory built car but certainly no worse for it and would be a great buy for someone at the right price.

All due respect but if they are so hard to find and the dealers are selling them how are they over inflating the prices?

What's that in answer to? Of course it's supply and demand, but that's no answer to my question, if it was meant to be?

Dealers can push up prices and drive the market - it has happened a lot in the Porsche world over the past few years.

I found the same thing when I was looking last year: Every time a car came up for private sale at what I considered to be a fair price it would immediately sell and re-appear with a dealer for a couple of grand more. Indeed, the seller I eventually bought from had several dealers offering to buy unseen over the phone.

A lot of the car I fancied last year are still hanging around now which says to me they are probably a little overpriced.

R500s? The OP can't find one, yet cars have changed hands which suggests that they are being priced to sell.

It was more an observation about the impact that dealers have on Caterham pricing in general rather than R500s specifically. That said, the fact that the R500s are selling doesn't necessarily mean they're not overpriced. It could just as well mean the supply is being manipulated to the extent that buyers have no choice - look at De Beers business model as an example of that.

There's always a choice. It's hardly one of life's essentials to own an R500.

i spent the best part of last year trying to find an R500D, price wasn't the issue as i found they generally all sat around the same area, but I struggled to find one in good condition. It seems to me the R500 can attack a less stereotypical caterham owner who are imo can less mechanically sympathetic. Over a period of around 8 months only 6 cars came up, 4 of which I wasn't happy with the condition of considering the age and millage of the car.

In the end I ended up travelling a couple of hundred miles to find a car I was happy with. definitely worth the wait and effort though :-)

Good luck in your search

I would buy a nice private R400d just as soon as an R500 but there are none of either model for sale. I would have thought there would be at least a few around but the only 2 400's are in Sevens and Classics and firstly they are over priced and secondly they are SV's.

I value a car at what I can expect to sell it for privately and that's what I want to buy it at.

If I did buy one of Caterhams R500's at 36000 and I decided to change it I would be expecting to loose 4-5000 to sell privately. Its not being cheap its having some sense not to buy from a dealer.

At the moment Caterham have lots of cars but they are overpriced. They are controlling the price of second hand cars to a large extent As a previous poster stated.

I love their cars but really where is the 40k in a new 420r? Add up the value of the parts and I guarantee it won't come to what they charge. That's why you can buy a basic starter kit and source all the bits to build a 420r for about 30k but it will always be worth far less than the 'real thing'

This R400 looks nice to me. Respray looks top notch as well. Have you enquired?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/c...

It's still at a dealership but looks slightly better priced than some of Caterhams stuff.
