Another novice question...

My R400D has a CAT. Many other R400/500 Caterhams seem to be using cat bypass pipes. What is the benefit of using the bypass pipe ? On the bypass pipe is the an area to connect the lambda sensor for the duratec ?

Thanks

Hi James, the benefit is clearer path for the exhaust fumes which leads to an increase in power and throttle response. The caterham bypass pipe does include the lamdba sensor connection but not all of them do so make sure you look out for this. The downside is that this may cause you to fail the emission test in the MOT if they are not caterham "frendly" testers, but its pretty quick to swap them around before and after the test.

The other thing to note is that it makes the car louder which is great for the road but may push you over the db limit for track days if you are on the edge :-)

Here's a straight back to back I did to answer that very question.

There's no restriction with the sports type of CAT that Caterham use. So there's very little difference. On my car, a which is sensitive to pulse tuning, there's a little bit of lost low torque but possibly better at the top.

Thanks guys, that's very helpful.

Seems like it makes a reasonable difference in he mid range. Another thing to add to my list of improvements !

I recently drove a DVA powered K series car (around 200bhp) and it was a real aural experience of pops bangs and crackles on gear shifts and over run and I'd like to see if I can get a bit more of this from the duratec.

Cheers

If you want pops and bangs, you should have bought a Sigma 125 or 140.
Admittedly, you wouldn't be travelling as fast though. biggrin

On the Caterham Parts website, I see there is a bypass pipe for an R500 Duratec listed. Would this be the same part for an R400 D ?

Also are S3 and SV bypass pipes the same ?

For the R400 I think you need the C400 bypass pipe

The R500 has a different sized silencer.

However I suggest give the parts department a call to confirm.

On the topic of bypass pipes - what is the legal position of driving in the UK & France with one fitted?
