We all have a responsibility to pass on the car hobby. When my 5 year old son suggested that we made a car for him, I agreed to do it together with him. If you search the internet you can see a lot of nice creations, but for this project having my son doing a lot of the work was just as important as the final product.

Since I have a Lotus, we agreed that we would make one for him too.
After some measuring I found a scale of 1:2 to be about the right size. I have later read that there are some building in 5:8 as well which is probably better if you have an older son or daughter.

I then did a lot of measurement and drew the plans on some plywood. I just took what I had in the shed, but in hindsight I think I would have taken a thicker one. I only had a 2mm, but the kids are really hammering the car so a 4-5mm one is probably better.

I made some plans with the strategic measures:

After some cutting and fitting:

Paint:

Steering

Shakedown with full crew:

Result: half seven smile

Since this is a proper racecar, we have entered it for a proper race! On the 31 of May we will compete with about 100 other cars in the local grand prix. The driver is really stoked, and is practicing hard

I strongly recommend everyone to do a project like this. We have spent about 15 hours, and about £100 in parts. The majority of the costs are stickers 20, Wheels 50 and paint 10.

The biggest issue in the project is to stay true to the concept of building it TOGETHER. It is really easy to get carried away and doing things yourself instead of letting the kid have a go. It is not a model or showcase but a funproject. On the net you can see a lot of builds which are really nice, but then they are made by dad only.

Hope you like it and starts you own project smile

That's fabulous. Mind that you don't get into the wrong one by mistake.

Think I missed my chance, my youngest son is 21 and about 6" taller than me. Should we make him a wooden SV?

This weekend we participated in the largest pushcar race in Norway, with about 120 participants.
Everyone won!
I also tricked one of the other fathers in kindergarden to build one so the could race too..
