Hello,

It was a sunny night up here in the North East of Scotland so I took the Caterham out for a spin. I was pulled over by a couple of traffic cops with a radar gun. Thankfully I wasn't speeding but one wasn't happy with my front number plate, which looks something like this:

http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://uploa...

He seemed unhappy because he thought it was a stick on thing but I'm not sure it is. However, the letters and numbers may be a touch smaller than indicated on the DVLA website. I take it that I need to go get a standard number plate, yes?

I'm quite surprised as the car went through a MOT about 4 weeks back and for various reasons has been in 3 garages over the winter, none of whom mentioned there may be a problem with the licence plates....

Cheers

Andy

If it's the same size as the one in the photo then the letters are definitely too small. I believe you can get a fine and points for a small licence plate on a car. MIne had one originally, but thankfully the original plate was in the car too, so I stuck it over the small one.

I'm not sure about the stick on ones, but from what I've read they're generally ok. You do need to have the correct sized letters though.

Mine failed the MOT because of bad spacing on my original private plate, as they are velcro'd in place I can swap my now legal ones for the others if I need to.

It looks quite stick on to me. If it's not rigid, but flexible and waffer thin, contouring to the nosecone, is it not stick on? I think they look a bit naff personally but that's just me.

I had a 3/4 one on the front and a full size on the rear. Both were the modern European style with official font. The front one was the width of the nosecone (standard S3), so didn't look glaringly small.

They did away with front licence plates here in Alberta several years ago, sighting that they were a danger to pedestrians if an altercation took place.

Andy what was the outcome, did they give you points or just a producer to get it replaced?

No ticket, just advised that I'd potentially get a £100 fine every time I take the car out. So I guess in hindsight, fairly decent of him...

The example you showed in your original post was my old car - it was definitely a 3/4 stick on plate. It would fail on size and not having the correct markings from the plate manufacturer.

That said, i was never picked up for having a stick on plate.

My current car has a full size one under the nosecone. It has fallen off three times, normally when it was raining and the first time it disappeared without trace so I went for the remaining 7 days on tour with no front plate at all.

IIRC, it is points + fine for an illegal plate, but only a fine for not having one at all!

You can get a fine of up to £1000 for number plate offences but your licence will not be endorsed with any points.

GOV.ORG states - "You could be fined up to £1,000 and your car will fail its MOT test if you drive with incorrectly displayed number plates."

"Number plates (also known as licence plates) should show your vehicle registration number correctly. You can’t rearrange letters or numbers, or alter them so that they’re hard to read."

2. Rules for number plates
Your number plates should:

be made from a reflective material
display black characters on a white background (front plate)
display black characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
not have a background pattern
Characters on a number plate can be 3D.

I took mine off - ran it over a few times and now keep it in the boot. You can't get points or fines for it falling off but you can if its the wrong size which yours is. The sticker has to be reflective vinyl as well.
I was even travelling behind a police car yesterday for about 2 miles and they didn't pull me. I was expecting them to but they didn't.
They look so much better without one

When I bought the car, the front plate was quite small, obviously illegal, looked a bit naff really.

I swapped it for a 3/4 as mentioned keeping the visual look official, bar the size. Never had an issue and I used it as my daily car travelling into a town with the local police station, where you'd often come into contact with them. I ever had no front plate for a while after it fell off on the way to Le Mans one year. I only bought a new plate for MOT time! All MOT's have never questioned it either.

I've had a stick-on plate for years - correct size though.
No issues.

Where did you guys get your correct size etch on plates? I did buy a standard one today but to be honest I'd prefer a stick on one. Many thanks.
