Newbie saying Hi,


I have recently bought my 1st Caterham, a 1600 crossflow with 5 speed and live axle and really enjoying the car's quirkyness. However:


I'm looking to replace the tyres, the current ones are old 185/70x13 having cracked sidewalls, my problem is I've jumped in and bought a new set of new 185/60x13 Yokohama A539's from a friend before doing my homework!

I am concerned with the sump clearance, if i fit these new tyres.

Sump clearance with 70 profiles is about 3.25 inches or 38cm, and with 60 profiles i think im going to have issues??

The road springs are non adjustable...standard original spax type.


My question is should i forget about fitting these 60 profiles or stay with a 70.

The car is for road use only no track days.

What size tyres are you guys using with the same setup?


Your thoughts please.

38cm down to 36cm not a massive difference. Is it marginal at the moment, do you hit the road at all?

3.25 inches is 8.2cm. I don't think dropping to a 60 profile will lower your sump height much.

Mine is around 7.5cm running on 185/55/R13 tyres and the lowered floor bottoms out before the sump does.

I've only had the sump touch speed bumps in car parks like these (and even then it was very lightly - just go slow).

Sorry about my metric conversion! it should read 8.2cm

I too have experienced the same car park speed humps you kindly pictured, 'just' kissing the sump as i crept over them. hence my concern going to a 60 profile.

Fortunately not encountered any speed hump problems on the road....yet.


Perhaps i just need to Tread carefully!



Pity as those A539's would look the part compared with patterns available in the budget 70 market i've seen. Yes i know looks aren't everything

Have you tried yoko AO21s? I seem to recall they had a decent profile and tread pattern whilst raising the ride height just that little bit extra....

+1 for Yokohama AO21Rs. Available in 185/70/13, good grip in wet and dry and look good too smile

Unfortunately Yoko A021Rs are no longer road legal, unless you can find an 'older' set...

I have been using them for years, and love them - but will have to look for alternatives next time round.

Is my ground clearance of 3.25" - (sump being lowest point) the 'norm' with a crossflow engined car??

Or maybe my road springs are U/S and affecting poor ground clearance?

From quite a few years ago I seem to remember someone saying sump clearance should be....coke can rolls underneath, but a bottle of wine won't !

This makes it somewhere between 57 and 75 mm (I just googled it). No clue what mine is though !

I've been told my front road springs are the early 'slightly banana shaped' low poundage type, (150 lbs??) and have upgraded to a set recommended at 250 lbs ?? sorry to be vague re poundage could be + or - slightly.

I hope to fit these asap then compare the ride height before dismissing the 60 profile tyres. Besides the spring upgrade will be beneficial in itself.

But in the meantime i need to source a suitable spring compressor. One step forward 2 steps back 'springs' to mind rolleyes

I used motorcycle spring compressors on mine just the right size to get between the coils

It might be worth fitting some adjustable platforms while you have the springs off.

Yes agree there but trying to keep costs down to the essentials, and doing my best to avoid getting bitten by the 7 bug and wanting this and that etc, but being skint does help! frown

Hi

Just an update to my original post.

I have finally got around to fitting the new upgraded front road springs (Dedion) to my car, with the good news of a greater sump clearance smile

So I should be ok with fitting those 60 profile tyres now.
