Hi.

I've got a Roadsport which I nearly always drive with the side screens on. If I wanted to try side screens off, is there a simple solution for fitting a drivers side mirror to keep the boys in blue happy?

Is there something out there that fits into the slots that the side screens themselves use?

Cheers.

How old's the car? My door mirrors come off, dismantle and then fit onto the windscreen sides using posts that came with the mirrors.

Like you I love driving doors off, probably more than with doors on given the right weather and attire!

I ordered one of these just a couple of days ago and will see how I get on:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Rear-Seat-View-Baby-...

I'm hoping the option of clip on over the screen or suction cup - and the fact it is convex, will provide suitable vision. Not sure if it will vibrate much though.
Only downside is the fact that if I am out and about with the doors on and then decide to go 'doors off', it is not easy to stow away the doors because of the mirrors.

A guy in the Lotus Club made some special brackets that slot into the existing stanchion holes, from which you can affix the SPA mirrors, which I have.
Whilst they are good in that when fitted they provide the option of taking the doors off and slotting them in the passenger footwell but retaining the mirrors in situ, I found they located the mirror exactly in my line of sight for right hand corners and found I kept having to look over, under or around the mirrors, so took them off.
Here is a link to the thread on the club site:
http://www.lotus7.club/forum/bulk-buys/side-mirror...

I recently met a guy who is clever with metal so may approach him to make me something but that won't happen any time soon.

REALIST123 - are they the SVA posts? I assume they are for use with the standard 'caravan' mirrors?

Also Blatmeister - I don't think by law you need to have a side mirror fitted so no need to do it just to keep the boys in blue happy. I'm getting my clip-on one just to maintain some safety around blind spots etc.

Yes, they are. I assumed from the first post that the op has the standard door mirrors, which fit those posts.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The bracket from the lotus 7 club looks promising. I'll investigate further.

In terms of legalities, I'm pretty sure you need on offside mirror as well as a rear view mirror. At least that's how I interpreted it when I looked it up.

Cheers.

Hi

I bought and fitted these from a guy on the Facebook Group. £25 the pair I think:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Caterham-Mirrors-Aero-Ra...

totally brilliant, drive all day long without the doors on, just have to figure out a way to breath over 70 now wink

Highly recommended.

Blat Meister - apologies, yes you are right. Minimum is two rear facing mirrors. I did also read the following which was probably where I got my misjudgement
"As a general rule, if a vehicle has them fitted as factory standard, they must be there and in a safe and usable condition, which is why classic cars are exempt as wing mirrors may not have been fitted originally"

Mike - now that is a very good design and incredible value I must say. I may have to try and work out where they sit in relation to my view in the corners. Nicely thought out design that.
Do let us know how you get on with them, in terms of usability and vibrations etc!

Without wanting to change the nature of this thread, these are the sort of things that annoy me about Caterham Cars. Things like this and the weather equipment that Soft Bits make, for example, are the sorts of things I would like Caterham to properly solve and offer. Nevermind. Glad there are people out there that do.

MikeGF.

They look like exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks. Only problem is the listing has ended on EBay so I guess he's maybe out of stock! I'll send an email and see if I can get hold of a pair.

Thanks again.

Hi

The listing only ended as that's the only way he can set them up on Ebay. If you give him a call/email he will send you a link to a new listing I am sure. He was a great guy and really very helpful.

They really are great, very well made, I am a dunce with a spanner and fitted them in 10 minutes.

After a couple of hours driving there seems to be no issues at al, and overall view from the mirrors is far superior as a)they don't vibrate like a ladies "pleasure item" when driving and b) the area of vision is so much wider.

Only problem, as I say is breathing over 70 wink But they have transformed the car, I had no idea how intrusive the doors where to restricting your view when driving (it also gives a bit more room in the cabin). I can only imagine how fun aeroscreens must be, and this is a great "in between" step till I have the pennies to pay for it smile

Mike,

With regards to breathing, I use these
http://www.buffwear.co.uk/buff-adult-headwear

I have the Original Buff. I didn't realise they had expanded the range quite so extensively!

What is nice is they control the air around your mouth helping you breath and they are very easy to pull up and pull down (which I tend to do when in 30mph areas etc)

I have two. One to cover my nose and mouth and one to go over my head to a) help hold my ear plus in and b) stop what little hair I have left from being ripped off.
A few years back the Lotus 7 Club got some made up with the club logo. Not sure if they are still selling them.

Cheers
