this looks great, but I wonder why the Low powered engine?

https://grrc.goodwood.com/goodwood-revival/caterha...

Also why has there been no emails or announcement on the Caterham Cars website?

I guess it is in keeping with the original Superlight of 1996 which was 1.6 and 133bhp.
There aren't many other options for the sigma.. Caterham are clearly reluctant to revive the 150bhp tune which is a shame if you ask me.

Let's hope that's the thought behind the marketing direction!

So then we can only hope the next announcement will be for a Superlight R, followed by a proper Superlight R500, and put an end to all this lightweight press marketing of non exclusives like the 420r and 620r, which we all agree are good cars, ( but let's be clear not great desirable cars!) and back to a range of exclusive Caterham models that people really have a want and desire to own!

Agreed Grant, and as I am sure you will delight in telling me your car was clocked faster than my R500 at Thorkmorton! wink

Seriously though, I am almost tempted to go for one of these, ie go back to complete basics and simplicity!

There is a lot to like about that level of raw purity, and I like the fact that it's going to be rare too!

I agree Nigel. I can understand the need to rationalise the model range and make it easy for new customers to understand. However, I think it does make it all a bit too predictable and like you say "non exclusive". Much preferred the days of individual models that each had their own branding and identity. Then you could choose the car that best fits with you fully justify why you feel proud to own it.

Well in time honoured tradition I have done something irrational and Gone with my gut instinct and ordered one of th Twenty Models today!

Ordered it as a kit too, will be delivered in March 2016!

Back to basics, plain alloy body and all the other bits pure carbon!

Only 135 BHP , how will I ever cope! winksmile

Even more snap decision than that James actually! Emailed the showroom at 09:15 and Greg called me back at 09:30.

After we confirmed what was included and that I would be the very first customer, the deal, was done at 11:00 Am and deposit paid!

I don't mess around me! wink

I admire your decisiveness. Are you able to confirm what is included in the spec, please? Just to push me over the edge! Thanks.

I have an original Superlight and have recently been having dirty thoughts about an R500. But those immediately go when I go for a blat - on the road, I do think the Superlight is a stunningly good package. Damn.

Of course buddy, especially if you are going to be a fellow Twenty owner! ( I feel some sort of nickname for those of us that are going to be owners! The Twenty Pack perhaps! wink )

It's essentially a 260 model, but with the choice extras added.

For my own peace of mind I got these items confirmed that they were included:

Upgraded master cylinder .

Upgraded front brakes with vented disks

Sports Bilsteins suspension with adjustable platforms.

New BMW diff and LSD ( that's the nice smooth quaint one!)

Rear adjustable anti roll bar.

And despite the fact it says only a few items are available as options I added what I consider to be essential for super lights :-

Lowered floors

FIA Roll Bar

battery master cut off.

The left will,be as it comes, ie raw and simple!

Remember - Just add lightness!

I can't imagine why most people who like or own Sevens (I'm both ) thinking a 420R (for example ) is neither great nor desirable. Given the carte blanche spec possibilities you can order just about any model of Seven just how you like it. I did anyway and 40k miles later I am still besotted. On the right day anyway

NICE! Congratulations.

I like everything about the car but for the engine, I couldn't live with 135hp

Hi Coppice,

Sorry was not meaning to run any of the new models down, I like them all, and was seriously considering a new 620r.

But my point was that they all seem just a bit normal, and I mean androgynous as Caterhams , that should really be a very special, and hence unique car.

As an owner of an R300, R400 and two R500's the new models seemed to miss something, can't say what the exact secret sauce is, but they don't seem to be special enough?.

A source I know well who is connected to the factory has told me they are concerned about unit sales of the 620, and very concerned about him may owners are selling them after a short period of ownership.

In their ow. Right all of the new models are great cars, we all know that right, but something is missing and its that secret sauce that's missing which relates into lack of sales.

Still we all keep buying new cars fro Caterham models , so they must be doing something right!

Answering my own question, factsheet from Caterham states 13" Apollos on Avon CR500's.
