Hi

I am considering dipping my toe back into Caterham ownership. Previously owned a 1998 ex race Roadsport A which had Supersport, 6 speed and LSD, so a good spec despite being a little cosmetically rough around the edges. This was a great introduction to 7 ownership and reasonable money with cars of that spec fetching around £10k back then. It seems the market has moved on significantly in that time, i had budgeted about £15k to get something of similar spec but maybe with Jenveys & Emerald, but looks like thats over my budget. Dont mind if not cosmetically perfect as will be using on track etc but seems a real lack of cars with the spec for that money? Has the market moved that much?

Matt
You still looking for a car? Al.

Have you tried to sell to one of the good dealers? As an example, I don't think I'd ever buy privately again (and not from some dealers!) after hearing some of the things that go on these days.

I'm not just talking about Caterhams, any car.
I don't think I would ever go to a Caterham dealer looking at the wedge they ask for so little car!

Well spotted, but I think Mikes comments are slightly unrealistic, of course Caterhams are 'so little car!' its the minimalist piece that makes them special and whilst you may save some 'Wedge' by buying privately there is a certain value by being directly from Caterham, although Mike150 did refer to dealers rather than the manufacturer who also sells direct both new and approved used (Cars that are factory standard builds)

still struggling to find a decent k series 7 for < £15000

How feasible is it to make an ex Maga Grad road legal?

That would depend on whether the one you are looking at previously been registered. I suspect most Mega Grads were road registered when new, but there are also quite a few out there that have only ever been track cars and their owners never bothered to go though the SVA/IVA process to get registered.

If you find a good one that has been registered with the DVLA it should be a case of buy some road tax and insurance, get an MOT, put some lights and number plates on it and drive away. It would take a bit more work if you wanted to turn it into a comfortable road car with nice seats, heater, windscreen, doors etc.

If a car hasn't been registered there would be a lot of work to be done to get it through the IVA and I wouldn't expect the value of the car to reflect these costs, so your better off finding one that has already been through the process.

Thanks for the reply. The few Mega's i have seen recently have been registered, sorn'd so just need the supplied lights refitting and then an MOT. Sounded pretty straightforward. I guess the only shame is that im losing some of the spec that i had before eg 6 speed. For an occasional weekend toy and odd trackday a year it would probably fit the bill

But - if anyone has anything well spec'd for my £15k ish budget drop me a note!!

Hi Matt. I might be able to furnish your needs. I have a 1996 1.4K Supersport that I had up for sale before Xmas but got little interest in. It's only a 5 speed though so may not suit. I was thinking about selling in the spring but if you want to know more, drop me a PM.

Matt, I have a 2002 SV with a very solid/reliable VHPD engine plus LSD, 6Spd box and more on sale here for OIRO £17K. Whilst slightly more than your budget it's an extremely reliable and comfortable car. PM me for more details or have a look on the for sale....it's the Black SV with red interior.

Thanks for all the proposals. Not looking for an SV and primarily would like at least 140bhp, minimum 1.6 and preferably 6 speed. Where are the scruffy k's?

Am i completely priced out of the market. I've even started to look at Westfields!

Trust me its not something i want but with a self imposed £15k budget its not getting me a Caterham of a decent spec. Because i previously owned a SS with 6 speed anything less will be a disappointment. I dont mind how the car is cosmetically which is why i was hoping a few scruffy but mechanically sound cars might pop up in budget

My Roadsport 140 was a bit scruffy when I bought it just over 3 years ago and that was nearly 18k. Had a great spec (LSD, 6 speed, big brakes, widetrack) but seemingly no-one else had picked up on it.

It probably helped that I was looking after the summer, but to be honest I think the prices have gone up a bit and you'd be lucky to find a good 140+bhp car for 15k. As others have pointed out though, if you increase your spend by a little you'll have a decent choice of cars.
