Has anyone done it? Or does anyone know of it being done before.

I am looking at various engine and gearbox options and I'm wondering whether there is enough room for the MX5 gearbox in the Caterham transmission tunnel.

The new 5 speed cars use the MX5 gearbox - 6 speeds are still using the Caterham box. I'm sure I read there's a small chassis change to account for it though.

According to the current MX5 brochure the 6 speed box has a wider spread of ratios and a lower first than 5 speeder, so I'm not sure it's a good idea.

Thanks folks, appreciate the feedback.

I'm specifically referring to the MK2 MX5 gearbox and not the current one, or the one that Caterham are using on their current cars.

Thanks again!

The Mazda 6-speed is huge compared to the 5-speed, though, so just because the 5-speed can be made to fit doesn't mean that the same would be true for the 6-speed.

That probably explains why they're still using their old 6 speed design then.
