Just to add to what Greig has said i would confirm that running costs are relatively low .

With an aero screen on i would say i get about 30mpg on the road on a run , half that on track . My car seems to eat the rear pads but they are relatively cheap .

Like Greig i have had a few non drive train niggles , frustrating but sorted in the end . Engine and gearbox seem pretty solid .

The rotrax oil is circa £110 a bottle and i had to get some to top up ( bought it from Amazon USA the cheapest place i could find ) since topping up the level hasn't changed .

Have done 7000 miles in mine now .

I was going off the Megabusa and wanted to change to a car engined Caterham because of serious issues with the engine and gearbox and seeing other Hayabusa engines 7's going bang at events. I'd assumed that spending £50k plus on a 620R would mean trouble free motoring for several years. It is quite disappointing to learn that even with a new one there are still issues. It's good to know the true facts going in though as you wouldn't get this information from a salesman. Obviously problems with the engine and gear box will likely be the most expensive to resolve and they would be new and are reliable on a 620R which is the main thing. As mentioned when other niggly things go wrong it's a good opportunity to upgrade and hopefully not too expensive or in warranty. Perhaps Caterham should release the 620R mk2 with these issues ironed out.
Does anyone know if Cateham have room for negotiation on new cars (620R especially) from the prices stated on the website?
Regarding the issues you had Greig did Caterham resolve these for free under the warranty or did you fix the problems and how much warranty do you receive with a new car from them?
Cheers Mitch.

There are no real issues, remember Greigs car was a demonstrator, not the current spec production car. ECU problems are unusual.

Should of mentioned also I had a look at the Meteor Motorsport website from you mentioning Greig it looked really good. As Simon has raced 7's for years he seems like the ideal man for the job!
If you were buying a new 620R again what would you do regarding the suspension knowing that you would get Simon to redo it? Caterham only do the 620R as a factory build but would they let you have it without any suspension? At least this way it may save some money to put towards Simons set up? Also you mentioned the Westfield Megabusa handling being better which may be because of the wide stance did you have the wide body on your 620R I see it's a £2500 option on the spec but would you recommend it? If there's anything else (optional extras) you would have or thing you would do differently if buying a new 620R again I would be very interested to hear them please mate

This is a well sorted Caterham http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/c...

Quicker than a 620r, road legal, and a lot cheaper smile

Simon Rogers has seen this car in action, ask him for his opion on it, the lap times show the pace the car has around different circuits ( not on slicks )

I wouldn't hold your breath. Like Greig said, those issues are common to all Caterhams and have been since the beginning of time.

Not what I was told when buying it mic - and if I hear it isn't full production spec there will be a lawsuit. What differences do you think there are?

Caterham sorted all the issues on may car under warranty ( and have continued to do so 27 months after i took delivery , the thermostat upgrade being done in the last few weeks ) .

Theres no such thing as a Mk2 , Caterham have continued to upgrade , the latest cars have a black coloured intercooler and black water pipes .( and probably more ) .

If you want a car that goes without issues buy an appliance , i hear fiestas are good .

All Caterhams need a bit of TLC from time to time but thats part of their character .

Greig, I'm saying your car was not a new car when you bought it, it was one of two cars built for the release of the model, so it may well show a couple of faults that any used car can.
As you know the intercoolers were changed and some of the throttle bodies were changed, current spec cars are produced with these done. The factory setup is well tried so I'd suggest if someone is thinking of buying one, they should try it before changing anything.
