The Kon'g strikes me as setting the more impressive time as not exactly a track orientated stripped out special in the way that the Caterham is. Ok it may cost alot more but that's about where the comparisons stop.

CR500s are not match for dunlop's current breed of t/day rubber. The CR500s lose grip very quickly when pushed as they overheat. I use them as a wet weather tyre on track only.

As AndrewD said, I'd be interested in seeing a well driven SR3, or SR8 (assuming they can stop the engine letting go) set a new record.

I bet the CSR was moving around a lot to acheive that sort of time. I suspect that if they let a properly setup race car on there i.e. sports GT like a Jade or nemesis, it may be interesting to compare the so called 'fast; road cars!! hehe

The Radical would probably record a time similar that what the DB9RS recorded, about 1:09.

As a Cat roadsport owner I am thrilled for Caterham. I can see the trye issue as valid, but, bang fer yer buck the Caterham wins hands down. For that money you can have a Caterham, ahouse and a boat.

ditto

but doesnt seem a totally fair test. what would happen if they had track rubber for the ccx

that said they did add a spoiler to ther ccx just because top gear wanted it.

How good did that Aston sound though? thumbup vol level = 10. Flat shifting is great isn't it! I love my sequential box!

What about the Top Gear wing on the K?

99% sure you can buy the ccx with that wing on it.
correct me if im wrong someone?

A friend who has been to the Konigsegg factory recently assures me that you can now specify the "Top Gear Wing" as a £5000 extra.

However rumour has it that the wing made no difference to the cars performance around the track, the difference between the first and second runs was purely down to Konigsegg setting the handling correctly for the track second time around, something they didn't manage to do first time (due to time IIRC).

An awesome result, if not completely unexpected.

I love to see such different cars run on the same circuit, as rarely do you get to see supercars put up against a Caterham in a race, thanks to rules specifically designed to stop the supercars being embarrassed. I remember a Caterham Vauxhall Turbo run by Tangent Motorsport in the National GT championship way back in 1995, spanking everything bar the McLaren F1s and finishing 4th at Silverstone.

Even in Gran Turismo you can't race a Caterham against other cars on the track, and you're left to just drive against the clock to see how much quicker the Caterham is than everything else.

I like the story about why Top Gear have never run a Caterham around the track before!

Top Gear specifically test cars with 100% no modification, which includes tyres. they have to be as delivered to the customer. So no record has been broken.

Aha, good point but they're selling the koenigsegg WITH wing now to customers as well, I believe! So not really a good point after all

aha, good point, but I bet you can buy a CSR260 from Caterham and specify Dunlop tyres too! So not really a good point after all!!!

Aston DBRS9's in the recent GT championship qualified at Donnington at ~1.12. The race caterham CSR can match that time, they are quicker than the R400's:

GLADMAN/GLADMAN Caterham CSR 260 1:12.314

So, if this was done properly... a properly driven and setup Caterham around the top gear track surely would be ~1.09, 1.10. Thats slicks so maybe a 1.13, 1.14 on road tyres.

As for a decent 250bhp SR3 or a prosport it must be way way under 1.09 around the top gear track given that it would easily smash the DBRS9 round any UK circuit.

Koenigsegg is just a joke if you ask me.

My sources inform me it actually went quicker on its original Avon CR500 tyres. The CR500s are designed for the car the Dunlops (to be fair to them) aren't.

Jwyatt have you used CR500s recently? They have changed a few times since they were first introduced!

Sounds a trifle odd IMHO when you hear people saying it's hardly fair to the poor little old £800,000 Koenigsegg because that big bad old £30K Caterham was on track day rubber!!yikes

Koenigsegg is just a joke if you ask me.The Juno SS3 did a 1.03 around Donnington this year and I understand that a 250bhp Sr3 does around a 1.08secs if that helps the equation

What amazes me is that track days are sufficiently popular that the manufacturers invest in creating specific tyres. How often are you guys going out there & doing these things?

I've done it once on a ZZR250 ten years back and shredded the rear tyre despite the morning being wet, and backing off in the last afternoon session as the engine started to hunt. Checked before the ride home, and the rubber was peeling off in 2 inch confetti.

Ahem....

Standard price: £31,000
260bhp engine option: £ 6,000
Performance gearbox: £ 1,950
LSD: £ 750
Aero front wishbones £ 500

So ignoring any other options that's a £40k Caterham not a £30k one - I know this is a lot less than the K BUT that's 33% more than was implied and quite significant. That sort of money makes the Caterham look expensive compared with other alternatives...
