I have an 05 Caterham Roadsport B ex. race car and have done a few track days but on the recent one (yesterday) the setup seemed a little wrong. The car was understeering lots on the exits of corners as the throttle was applied on exits. I have the three different front anti roll bar choices (orange, green and red I think!) and an adjustable rear anti roll bar.

I was just wondering what settings people use for track use as my car seems too soft for the track. I believe im currently using the orange front anti roll bar which I think is the medium one. The rear anti roll bar is in the 2nd to bottom ball joint of the four choices. May it be something other than the anti-roll bars? Also there is always two of us in the car when on the track.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks.

Orange is the softest of the three then red and green is the siffest

I used to run my race car with the rear on the softest setting with the orange bar and stiffen the rear up by one notch for every front bar increment so red was one from softest on the rear and green two from softest on the rear and it always gave a nice balance and no understeer.

Setup is a very personal thing though but there might be an element of your driving making it understeer too

Did you have the car setup for you when you bought it?

If not the car will almost certainly have been flat floored nad setup for the previous owner, there are several excellent specialists who can do this for you, one such is Stuart Faulds at Fauldsport. There are others but I am biased.

Get it setup properly, when you have done that, if the understeer is still present then it's you not the car wink

Thanks for the replies

It was raced in the roadsport B's in 2007 and we purchased it early this year so as far as I know it was setup for the track, though he may have softened the car for road use as the season was over and he'd finished racing.

Over the winter I'm going to send the car off to a specialist to get it set up properly for the track but I was just looking for idea's to change the setup myself before winter as have got a few more track days in mind.

Is there anything else apart from the anti-roll bars that could be modified to help the handling? The car has adjustable Bilstein dampers, adjustable rear anti roll-bar and the 3 front anti roll-bar options and as mentioned before the front anti roll bar is the red (medium) one, the rear anti roll bar is second to soft and not sure about the damper settings.

Thanks

Make your mind up!!! wink

You don't need to send the car away to get it set up, get it done now, it takes a couple of hours and take your passenger with you so the weights can be done properly - there's no point setting it up with one person in the car when you normally have two! If it's set up for one person and you have two in, it will react differently so start there

Like James says, there are loads of places to get the setup done, I used to get mine done by PHer Incorrigble, he's just outside Storrington in Sussex.
