Could anybody tell me the correct oil capacity for an 07 Caterham R400 Duratec with a standard wet sump and oil coiler. The sump is a Raceline one which again I think is standard spec. I've had two different answers from Caterham!!!!

Cheers

I have just received by brand new owners manual from Caterham for my new r500 Duratec.

it covers all the new models too.

from that manual the recommended oil capacity for Duratec 210 with wet sump inc oil filter is 4.5 litres.

Straight from the horses mouth as they say.

It's closer to 6l - start with 4.5 and just use the dipstick (engine warm, just switched off - it'll read around 5mm low when it's cold).

Guys,

The information I provided which came direct from the Caterham manual is incorrect.

The true amount needed is nearer to 5.5 - 6 litres.

Therefore even though the information came from the Caterham owners manual, the amount stated in the manual is incorrect.

Sorry for any confusion.

Nigel.

Cheers, I to received a new manual in the post which states 4.5 litres!! However it recently had a service from Caterham and I had to drain the oil a few days later due to a slight seep from the sump. When I put the oil back in I measured it as i did and put arond 5.25 litres in. I didn't remove the oil filter and would have lost a small amount in the drain and transfer back in so the 5.5 litres in nearer the mark.

Out of interest the old K series R400 manual states 4.5 litres so I wonder if they just haven't bothered correcting it for the Duratec engine!!

Yep,

You are probably not far off, I am sure the new owners manual that was delivered to me was probably a bit of a hash of old manuals.

As always better to check oil levels as to what looks like the right amount for your own car and set up, IE wet sump, dry sump with or without oil cooler etc etc

FWIW, my new R500 Duratec with dry sump and oil cooler looks like it needs about 7.5 to 8L as a full fill.

Might get expensive!!
