Filmed yesterday, in the top 5 apparently.

Bit of trouble getting heat in to the tyres but overall a pretty good performance. not bad for 40k!

Definately worth watching I reckon...Sunday 8pm.

How do you know it's in the top 5?

"Apparently in the top 5"

I had to speak to Caterham this morning about something, so I asked if they'd heard anything - staff haven't been told, but the understanding is that it's "Apparently in the top 5"

Trouble getting heat into CR500's in the dry? My race car has 30bhp less and I could overheat them within 10 laps of Brands Indy in October. I could get them properly warmed up on a green flag lap.

More likely the surface was too cold

From the horses mouth via BlatChat.

OJ - Maybe the Stig can give you a call about getting heat in to the tyres :-)

Dear all,

Having just returned from a bitterly cold Dunsfold aerodrome, I am happy to report that all went well.

As you will have no doubt worked out by now, contrary to belief we weren't winding up the entire owners club last week, and we knew all along that we were confirmed to be on the track for timed laps and a studio segment. Obviously we couldn't tell you this directly, although the "will they / won't they" conspiracy theories have been keeping us amused in the office all week - it is heartening to see such passion from the club and to know how much you all care for the marque, so thank you for all your support.

Today was extremely cold, with a peak temperature of just 1degree. The Stig completed approximately 20 timed laps, and reported back to us through a series of grunts, whistles and sign language that he felt that the car was set up perfectly, and that he was very much enjoying driving it. However, due to the extremely low temperatures he did struggle to get heat into the tyres, so the car's ultimate lap time was somewhat compromised.

We worked extremely hard to make sure that the car was in absolutely A1 condition, and i am sure that when you see the program on Sunday night you will agree that the car looked stunning. Thanks must go to all at Caterham who haven't had a weekend for the last fortnight, and to everyone who was still working late into the night - it was all worth it.

As for the lap time, Stig was adamant that the car had "much more still to come in better conditions", so hopefully we will be invited back in the summer to really depress the supercar boys!

So, without further ado, to find out how fast the car was...

tune in to BBC2 on Sunday at 8pm...

Best Wishes,

James Drake,
Marketing Coordinator,
Caterham Cars.

Looking forward to seeing it.....
As usual though these lap times are complete bks to anyone with a brain, due to the massively varied conditions they are run in!
how can you compare a R500 in 1 degree temps with an Enzo filmed at 20 degree temps!!

Yeah but Ultima managed a 1'12.8 on rather less than a summers day. On road tyres. So thats the kit car target to aim for.

TBH doesn't really matter where it came in the list (but Jeezez.H.Christ, faster than then Veyron) but just how much fun did that look ?

Isn't that what we all know is "the thing" about cars like this ? The Stig wasn't just driving round the track, he was hoooooning it smile

Could've sworn he said his car was 25 years old - perhaps a pre-production Boxster then?

Stop the press!!!!

Fat Arnie in "I hate everything the Caterham factory ever does because my car is the one and only Fastest Caterham in the World" shocker!!!

Don't worry son, i'm sure Top Gear will be on the phone tomorrow morning asking to borrow your car, which everybody who reads these forums knows is miles better than the R500, or indeed anything Caterham Cars has ever, or will ever, produce. rolleyes

Yep, vauxhall cars are slow round ccts' anyway. Power is great for the pub but when it comes to making a car properly fast other priorities are way up the list before BHP.

anyway, back OT... WASN'T THAT THE MOST FUN LOOKING LAP ever on TG ?

Great to see the caterham perform so well. Shame Top Gear gave it no coverage at all. Bearing in mind it was whatever the 5th fastest, and no doubt considerably cheaper than anything else TG choose to ignore this and concentrate on a car no-one in the UK will ever buy in the Venturis or whatever it was called. Completely and utterly pointless.

That and the fact Caterham are a British company and we should be promoting and buying more British goods in a time of economic uncertainty I think they did an incredibly poor job.

Poor form Hamster. Well done Caterham.

I agree that the comparison with the Veritas was totally pointless. Fantastic to see the R500 hit the top 5 and beat the Veyron. I was expecting the whole "built in a shed by blokes with beards" angle. I can't understand why they spent so much time on the rather obscure Veritas which they concluded was carp.
