After reading the EVO article on the Litchfield suspension and Cosworth SC package for the Mazda MX-5 (EVO April 09) I was looking on the web and noted that some fora said that the MX-5 2 litre engine is the same as the Duratec. Is this right? If so there's an alternative to an internally modified 2 litre N/A...

DOI. I enjoyed the compressor whine when I had a JRSC'd CTR, but am currently an MPV driver - will get an enjoyable car again when family commitments allow. Don't have the skill for ~500hp/tonne though!

Both Caterham and Westfield have run Duratec engined cars with a Supercharger, so it has been done.

Here you go, a couple of links:

Caterham X330

Omex Supercharged Westie

Interesting - a lot of cooling in the OMEX setup! The Cosworth site shows an intercooler, which was missing from the standard JSRC / K20A setup, though not an issue at the fairly low level of boost mine was set to.

I'm planning to go the FI route next year. I have a spare Duratec 2.0 and new Rotrex waiting to go in the car. Thanks for the Omex link; it's good to read some positive feedback on the Westfield install (and there's a short clip on Youtube of it on the track which is quite interesting)

I'm working with Raceline on my install. They put together the supercharged Caterham x330 and learnt quite a bit from it. The plan is to use a modified WRC inlet plenum on DTH-TBs; the x330 and Omex cars both use a single TB on the plenum which considerably affected the low-down throttle response. The complex bit for me is going to be fitting the cooling into my series 3 chassis. The x330 was in a CSR chassis. I don't know how the Westfield bay size compares but it certainly looks bigger in the photos. The good news is that I know the supercharger fits fine with the block installed. It's just the pipework and radiators that will be the challenge.

I'm also using a Quaife sequential box like the Omex and Caterham cars. It's the only thing that'll cope with the power and torque at a half-reasonable price.. I'll no doubt take some flak for it but I've also fitted a Racelogic TC system to help with the extra torque when it's greasy out. It's extremely adjustable and I'd rather have something that I can gradually dial out than be caught out.

FWIW you might want to look up James Miles who posts on BC as he's in West Sussex and his Super Seven has had a variety of SC's and a Turbo on his Cossie with great results over the years.

One year when he upgrade to the TC he added nitrous, and following him on a Targa-Liege rallye in Belgium was blowing flames out for the overrun @ night, which was fab to see. The TC+Nitrous if I recall correctly was IRO 400Bhp....

Thanks Steve, I wasn't aware of that. I'll drop James a line; I found a contact address in one of his old Blatchat posts. He could have some valuable advice, seeing as how he's been through it all before.. redface)

All the best,
Darren
