Out of intrest why do you consider the 6 speed a must?
The ratios really suit the rev happy, less torquey nature of the shorter stroke 1.6 and 1.4 engines and help keep them on the boil. Also the shift quality is nicer with a shorter throw and narrower gate. I think the only time i'd go for a 5 speed is if I was doing lots of touring, however there's only about 500rpm difference at 80mph.

i know i have had to have the 6 rebuilt three times in around 10hrs whereas the 5 would do a season.
James, unless you have 300bhp, you might use the clutch when you change gear biggrin of all the caterham parts that have a reputation for poor reliability, the 6 speed box is not one of them!

Other than those who want different ratios for touring (???) it seems to be only the big torque duratec boys who like 5 over 6 speeds. The K-R500 (and even the D-R500) use the 6 speed box (unless sequential on the D-R500). It's the default option.

Never had a problem keeping the RSA on the boil with the 5 speed. Only real probs with it was the plastic saddle.

Bert, i know a lot of people who wouldn't agree....lol

Agreed, the 6 speed on the previous R400 was a stonking box, reliable and well geared for off the line.

James, firstly, your on your third box already? I knew you had probs but didn't realise you were on number 3! Secondly, did you have them fixed, ie what broke?

Bert, for reference one of the front runners in the r300 championship dnf'd the first race due to a broken gearbox last saturday.....

Interesting. There are failures I know, but not to the level that they have a specific reputation for going bang I thought. Of all the things I broke on my R500, the box wasn't one! Mind you the engine didn't last long enough to wear the box at all!
