Ooh! A very early Caterham - do you know much about its history?
A bit: it's chassis number CS3/3557/R ("Seven Cars Limited" plate) and was invoiced from the Caterham factory on 1st May 1974. It was supplied in component form, less engine and gearbox, at a price of £1042.96. The car then went to New Zealand where it was first registered on 12th August 1975. The second owner (from 1981 to 2002) raced it quite extensively, initially with a 1498cc Ford engine and gearbox then with a 2 litre Alfa Romeo engine and 5-speed gearbox. It was sold back to the UK in 2002 and underwent a fair bit of rebuilding in the hands of the then owner. He sold it to a dealer and I bought it in September and had it shipped back to New Zealand. It came with some history (and photographs of it being raced) and I am trying to find out more. These are real photos of my buddies car during a 500km race that we both drove the car in last week.
Earlier this year the car spat the diff out during a race and split the fuel tank open, the back of the car caught on fire.
After it was repaired, we put the flame decals on his car while he wasn't watching... He left them on.
During the rebuild he fitted a fuel cell ..... Seems that the mechanics put too much fuel in and some came out the vent.
The fire put itself out by the next corner.apparently it happened a few times, each time after pitting to refuel.
