RE: Black Tie and Pie 2012 - new and improved

No, not at all. Why is it that some people think PHers are a bit too posh for their own good? Someone else was asking if a "non-label" dinner suit would be laughed at yesterday.
We are all down to earth people who happen to like cars more than most and the event is about the people. Having said that it is expected (and nice) for people to make some effort. So a grey work suit might be considered a bit of a poor show. If you are going to bend the rules, do it in some style... red corduroy perhaps
As for the tie, if you can't tie one, use a clip on ... however... and most know what is coming next...
There is a special place waiting in hell for those who wear a clip on but hide a tie-up in their pocket to drape around their collar later.
And you WILL get pointed at and laughed at if caught

That was me!
Whilst I'm sure most people on here are actually normal and down to earth in real life, have you seen some of the threads on here? The snobbery of some keyboard warriors is breathtaking. In fact we've even had a thread discussing just this subject in the past! There was a lot of contempt for those who have the wrong shaped collar, or a cheap off-the-peg outfit.
Now granted I think it's a poor show to turn up in a work suit when it's a black tie event, but provided you've made the effort to wear black tie, I could think of nothing worse than spending the night at an event where people are judging the angle of your collar and quality of cut of your jacket.
I'm pleased to hear that the event is nothing like that in real life and I very much hope to come next year, gutted that it clashes with a wedding this year!!
I've been guilty of taking the mickey out of people's collar choice. However it was certainly said (and I hope was taken) with tongue firmly in cheek. BTaP is about as unpretentious an event as you can imagine. The drink of choice is a strawpedoed Smirnoff Ice ferchrissakes!
Although do make sure you go wing collar, self tie, nothing but white shirt and black tie, won't you? Special place in hell if you can't self tie but keep one in your pocket to drape around your collar for later on

To be honest as much as you see those threads on PH, when you actually get to the venue and the dinner, most people will be beyond caring what you are wearing.I like to wear a cummerbund, which some people dislike/put down in threads. But I like it and like the history behind it so I wear one.

To be fair to the posters in those threads, it is usually in response to a bloody stupid question in the Lounge! Now granted I think it's a poor show to turn up in a work suit when it's a black tie event, but provided you've made the effort to wear black tie, I could think of nothing worse than spending the night at an event where people are judging the angle of your collar and quality of cut of your jacket.

If you ask a stupid question, you get a stupid answer - especially there!

Bad form suggesting someone else, but here I go anyway...
Maybe one or two of the ladies could offer the gentlemen a black tie tying service for charity?
I'd be happy to pop a quid or a fiver in a bucket for whatever this year's charity is.
I know what style of dresses you are hoping they a wearing Maybe one or two of the ladies could offer the gentlemen a black tie tying service for charity?

Wander down to the bar early with it undone, or skew-whiff and there will be a number of people most happy to do it for you I'd be happy to pop a quid or a fiver in a bucket for whatever this year's charity is.
