RE: Crazy Corsa Smashes 'Ring Record
Discussion
just wondering if the car is running track rubber....after spending saturday at bedford in a friends fwd fiat coupe with cut slicks, I am amazed how much they transform a car, especially on a track.
I agree though, car was on the ragged edge in the clips shown, and the driver had BIG cahones.

Hmmm,
This post from the Mazda forums:-

from 2003 suggests that the civic type-r did the ring in 8.47 in November 2001. Assuming it was less that 8.47.99, surely the type-r still holds the record?
Maybe a race is necessary, perhaps they could use the face lifted 2004 type-r, which I believe was a tad quicker than both the 2001 and new 2007 type-r?
Hang on, the S3 is a hatchback too, thats down as 8.41, and again from 1999!!
New record I think not!

those are hot hatchs though and the article refers to superminis so wouldnt they mean the record for superminis? This post from the Mazda forums:-

I think they do mean the record for superminis but I guess the point is it's no longer a supermini in the original sense. The EP3 Civic Type R weighs 1200kg and that is labelled a regular hot hatch so the fact this Corsa weighs in at about the same and is labelled a 'supermini' is a bit of a joke. I have to admit I've got a real hatred for these cars. Any car firm that pays Sean Paul for his music to use on their adverts is in trouble.... C'MON!!
Direct link to the Video of the whole Corsa OPC/VXR lap here:

I always wondered why people hate inanimate objects that they don't have any dealings with, themselves. I mean, I like a lot of cars, I love quite a few, lots of others leave me cold... but actively hate? c'mon...Craivold said:

Ah, I see your point now... Respect is due. Vauxhall makes good cars.
Funny thing all of a suden poeple started hating Vauxhalls after clarksons rant on top gear about the Vectra.
Hot Vauxhalls have always been good value and great alrounders most current VXR's are fantastic.
Its just badge snobery and following the crowd mentality to hate a badge. I could be wrong thing is it makes second hand vauxhalls a bargain so I aint complaining

My mistake, Supermini not Hot hatch. Thank you for not jumping all over me and making me look stupid for my mistake! I agree with your point though... what IS the difference between a Supermini and Hot hatch? So, as I have nothing better to do, I have researched it!
The wheelbase' of these two machines are almost identical as well as all the other obvious similarities (according to Parkers). However the length of the Corsa is 1mm under 4 metres so I thought, perhaps thats the criteria for supermini?
Wheelbase....
- Type-r = 2575
- Corsa = 2511mm
- Type-r = 4140mm
- Corsa = 3999mm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_classification
And I read the following......
"Current supermini hatchbacks are approximately 3900 mm long"
(So the Corsa is a tad longer than the approximate classification, and)
"4250 mm long in case of hatchbacks"
(So the Type-R a tad shorter than the classification).
AND furthermore......
"A hot hatch or sport compact is a high-performance small car, usually a hatchback, based on standard superminis or small family cars with improved performance".
So, (if wikipedia is to be believed) they're BOTH hot hatches!
It's no record breaker in my eyes, they've just finally caught up! I would expect a 192bhp smaller car to be quicker!
I won't be on the waiting list.

It's a Vauxhall.. nothing will make it better!
You would turn your nose up at a VX220 and a VXR8?The Astra VXR is very quick but unrefined and unruly, the Vectra I really don't want to drive...280bhp through the front wheels strikes me as overkill...
...trying to think of the last truly good 'proper' Vauxhall (i.e. not imported and re-badged) as a driver's car...and I'm going to have to go back as far as the hot Chevette (HSR?), believe it or not...

Credit where credit is due, can't be a bad car if its quick around there.
Erm...power+grip+stiff-enough suspension = quick 'ring time. Doesn't necessarily make a good car......I said it a couple of pages back...EVERYONE is obsessed by the Nordschleife...and I just don't understand why...cars are becoming over-tyred* and over-powered just to get better 'ring times, and their fun-factor (in the real world) is falling as a result!!!
- I bet this is running on something like 205-215-225/40/17s. Minimal-sidewall over-wide tyres just to give it more grip, rather than engineer-in a decent chassis to give good grip AND good progression!!!
