Kids in the back?

I've had a new mustang on order for some time, it's due March (ish).
As the dealer had just has some initial deliveries I went to have a look to ensure I could get the kids (8&3)in the back.
I'm 6'2 and with me in the driver seat there is no room for legs in the back, even little ones!
Doh ! Potential deal breaker :-(
Can Anyone who has taken delivery report the real world workability of ferrying the kids around?

I had a 2006 Mustang as a daily for 5 years and it was tight in the back as like you im 6'2" cant comment on the new ones but I went from the mustang to a challenger as I have 3 kids (twins age 6 and one 11), still snug in the back but better than the mustang for rear leg room that's for sure

Great thread, I was about to start a "kids seats in the back thread" so I will piggy back this one if it's ok.

From my test drive of a 'vert, there will be just enough room in back (mine are 4 & 6, and the 6 year old is tall, we buy 8-9 clothes).

What booster seats / child seats fit??

Anyone have any ideas??

This is is quie a surprising revelation.

I have no issues with my two children, aged 13 and 4, sitting in the back seat of my '71 Mach 1. My son is tall for a 13 year-old and yet there's plenty of room for them both.

We have a 2010 vert, daughter is 13 and sits behind the wife who has to pull her seat forward a tad, I am 6 2 and my lad sits behind me, hes 8, its a squeeze and at some point he will not be able to sit comfortably!!

I have had my nieces in my S550 without problem, one is 5 and the other 9 with plenty of leg room. I am 5'10 and my OH is 5'8 and with the 4 of us there was no problem.

My 10 year old boy fits perfectly in the back but I'm only 6ft but do like my seat way back. Weirdly my 5ft 6ins daughter's head is up against the rear glass yet my 6ft lad's head isn't.

I cannot fit in the back unless my head is bent sideways. It isn't the legroom, though snug, it's the headroom you need to worry about.

We think my son has a short torso and long legs

Think ill take the clan down to the dealer to cram them all in their demo and go for a burn. see how far forward i can get the seat and still drive comfortably.

Don't really want to cancel the order having waited so long

Hmm odd, i'd never thought about moving the seat forward....we took the kids (11 and 14) into the dealer to find out if it was an above or below the knee amputation they'd be having. There's a great range of prosthetics available these days, the younger one actually believed me for a while!

Certainly he knew i'd never be cancelling the Mustang order!

As it happens they fit in fine, that was a vert though so suspect the head room may be a bit more challenging in the fastback.

One benefit if you can't fit them in the back then you won't be worrying about them scuffing the sill plates, the seats etc etc

I'm only 5'11" but I have had many passengers in the back of my various Mustangs over the years, both kids and adults. Occasionally you'll have to sacrifice a bit of front seat legroom, but its worth it to own one. I had several bride and grooms in the back of my '05 and I don't think the s550 is any smaller inside.

Tall may not be the issue, I have had fat larger friends struggle to get in and get comfy

Yes it is a tight squeeze in the back of a Mustang but if you are the driver then you are guaranteed enough space.

In my 2015 Mustang GT Auto there are a few inches of available leg room behind both front seats as I have deliberately placed the standard position for the driver seat a little forward which works for me as I don't have any clutch work to worry about. I like to have both front seats about level.

I have driven around 500 miles with an adult rear seat passenger (2 persons separately) seated behind the front seat passenger who had the seat forward a bit and importantly raised a bit to make more space in the back. Having 2 adults in the rear would not be impossible.

I do recommend that you practice a few techniques for getting in and out of the back so that you can demonstrate to your disbelieving passengers that it is actually possible. You will have to spend a minute winding the front seat fully forwards and then after trying arse first you will probably favour head first which requires a twisting turn as you sit down. The front seat then needs to be wound back otherwise the front seat passenger wont be able to get in or will have their head up against the windscreen. If you have a passenger behind the driver then you will have to repeat on that side as it's not easy to slide over from one seat to the other in the back. Just try some hard acceleration as it gets everyone firmly seated and they seem to shut-up their complaints about comfort and just worry if they are about to die. Getting out of the back seats is just as much fun.

I would say that it is highly probable that no one has managed to christen the back seat of their Mustang yet but I may be proved wrong.

Yes, i'm 6ft 2 & my kids are 8 & 6. My daughter (6) sits behind me and the loudmouth .. sorry my son sits on the passenger side. I just can't have my seat right back, its no deal breaker and certainly isn't uncomfortable for me or the little un. Let me know if you want a picture of the back as i have it.

This was my main criteria. Ive been looking at Jag XKRs recently but there is no chance my 3 yr old will fit in the back as there is zero leg room. Hence today I went looking at a Mustang before being sensible and placing an order for a land rover discovery and making a "lifestyle" purchase complete with mountain bikes and skinny latte.
I can confidently report the mustang has sufficient room in the back for a small child behind a 5'8 passenger with room to swing their legs a little. I would be less happy putting the little one behind myself at 6'2 for any length of time as I would need to move the seat forward a little (but not uncomfortably) to give him sufficient leg room.

Interesting response to this thread. I've been there with rhe XKR and had an isofix seat in the back for the nursery run but no chance of getting the family in. I'm toying with idea of a Mustang and would compromise my driving position for short family trips and I'm 6'2" as well. I should probably explore a bit more.

Big change to a Disco though!
