Has anyone done this personally and could offer some wise words on dealing with the american dealerships and the possibility of tax-free sales...?

I'm a bit of a mustang fan and have abused a few hertz hire cars on trips to the US but the prices that UK importers seem to be charging has really put me off getting one so far.

In the past I used to import cars from Japan so the paperwork side of things doesn't bother me but I know next to nothing about american dealers and how they work..

So if anyone has an experience of them i'd appreciate them sharing some insights..

Can't help, I'm afraid, but I'm sure there are a few chaps on here that can offer advice.

I see you're in Newbury. I'll be moving there on the 27th of this month, so if you end up buying a 'Stang this year, can I be you best mate?

Yep, that's right folks. After boring you with questions about the width of Mustang's and their ability to squeeze into UK garages, not to mention boring you with tales of lost house sales and other tales of woe....we finally exchanged yesterday and move a week on Friday. So, how long do you reckon before the Zed's up for sale and the proper Mustang shopping starts?

Right, now back to topic. If no one here can help, try the Corvette forum as I'm sure a few have personally imported them.

I imported mine in 2005, it was a pretty painless exercise!

I produced an article for ACW magazine about the experience & have the file at home, if you PM me your e-mail address I will send it to you tomorrow.

top man!!!
when is the house warming party [/quote]

The new place has cream carpets, so you can forget that! I'll have a garage warming party instead, once there's a Mustang in there

Slurms - I take it you're an ex-300 man then? For the money, they are great cars and I'll be sad to see it go. Still, a pony will more than make up for it!

Thanks guys..

looks like the mustang OC guys have got a load of information on their site about doing just this.. Including a friendly dealer in florida..

Time to start working out what kind of mustang I want..

Think i'll be after a V8 Convertible this time round.. though the Saleen 281 does look absolutely stunning..

I'm not honestly sure steve..

If i'm buying a car thats new from a dealer i'll arrange it all from the UK and cross my fingers that its ok on delivery. Used is trickier.. As you've got no way to have a car inspected unless you do it yourself..

thats true but you could always get someone over there to go take a look for you! there are american mustang forums full of decent folk who would be willing to help out

I second that it's very easy to import a new mustang from the USA.

I've found a friendly ford dealer who understands whats required with an export sale. So i'm not worried about that.

I'm currently looking at the US e-bay motors site to get an idea of used prices for the Saleens..

Any body wanting a good American car, would be foolish not to import it directly themselves.
With almost $1.97 / 1GBP
There has never been a more economical time .

It is so easy.

Buy your new steed in Texas.
Ship out of Houston.
Texas has one of the lowest car pricings in the States.
Cost to ship from Houston to thamesport in a container $950.
Ebay.com is a good starting point.
Any more Q's.
let me know.
Done it twice now.
just gets easier.
