[quote=Stighehe by the same token, have either of those 2 people driven a modified GT or Stage 3 Roush/Saleen S281 etc. to make an objective comparison?

There are many factors to buying a car and some will buy the Shelby on looks alone. Some have even bought the Shelby nose and put it on the GT.

The principal advantage to the GT500 is a fiscal one and it is that most insurers prefer a stock car to a modified one so stock for stock, the GT500 may be a good "standard" buy but once you modify it, that advantage is blown. I know your customer from the Mustang Forum and know that car puts down 600bhp to the rear wheels. That is beyond a GT's limits and so makes perfect sense. I also know from his posts that he is getting massive enjoyment from the car and we have a jusxtaposition as (UK)Gibbo went from saleen to M3 CSL and your customer did the reverse so what is right for one person isn't right for others.

As for GT5-00s at list price, I know from the US Forums that there are hundreds of people just waiting for that list price to arrive and the stampede will start. The GT500 makes more sense in America with it's straight roads and lust for power plus they are very badge-oriented and all seem to think it's going to be a collectors car (which it isn't).

AS for your GT500, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. I can guarantee that anyone here who drove that car would return whooping and hollering and expounding it's virtues and would probably lust for one because no matter how we theorise, the desire for a car is totally emotional. I find the Mustang a little clinical in its abilities sometimes and so beating on it occasionally is the only way to have fun. I had a Corvette C4 once and that was by no means a great car but hell, it was fun - mainly for all the reasons a GT500 is - you could smoke the tyres, throw the tail round with abandon and laugh all the way to work.

I too could have afforded a GT500 (but it wasn't out so it was academic). If I'd sold my second car, I could have bought a 997S too but Porsche parts and servicing make it a totally unrelated car in terms of competition. Turbo replacement will bankrupt you and no matter how good the car is, the overall cost of ownership is in a different league to a Mustang which demands little more than simple oil changes. If it was otherwise, loads of people would be driving old Porsches - but they're not as good as people make out either.

Anyway, vive le difference and any Mustang is a great Mustang as far as I'm concerned. Some are created more equal than others as one American put it.

To put things in a US perspective, incidentally, the premium on a GT500 makes it more expensive than a discounted C6 Z06. Now there's a car I hate the look of but I know driving it would seduce my soul. wink

think my lack of experience on the forums has shown here , your points are valid and kinda wot i been trying to say all along , whats good for one is not good for the other! And i was one defo behiond the virtues of the Shelby, maybe just did not put the point across in the same manner , i was also not saying too much on power issues etc for not wanting to say too much on a vehicle we no longer own. But boy it was a machine and im pleased the new owner is enjoying it, im sure he will wring all there is from it and want more in the long run! Power indeed corrupts!

HI there

I'd just like to say that for me the Mustang was a right move, I loved mine to bits and its definetely the most grinn inducing car I've ever owned and certainly the best at certain things like looks, power, noise, rarity and cost of running etc. well apart from fuel cost anyway.

I sold the car because I had owned it for 18 months and I was worried if I kept it long then it may have started to loose me serious money. As it turns out when I sold the car I actually lost no money on it at all because when I originally purchased the car I got a great deal.

Plus I wanted to try something new, I supercharged the Stang last October, sorted the suspension over Christmas and enjoyed the car throughout Spring and Summer, I was very impressed with how the car drove when I had finished it.

I've gone for a change because it was the right time to sell in order to prevent loosing any money and I fancied a change, theres no harm in that.

Buying the CSL has cost me no money in essence becaused I used the money from the Mustang to buy the CSL. Again the CSL should not loose me any money for the simple fact values seem to be increasing due to the fact the CSL is better than the new M3, hence demand for a very limited availability car. So yet another safe buy for me.

Before deciding on the CSL I had drove C6 Z51, C6 Z06, BMW Z4M Coupe, RS4 Avant, RS4 Saloon, EVO 9 FQ360, 911 GT3 and the entire Vauxhall VXR range including the VX8R at Donnington on a track event they held. The CSL was the car I choice as its simply a joy to drive, the handling is simply amazing and its a very well engineered car built to very high quality. Like the Mustang its making me grinn and its fun. After the CSL my next car will no doubt be a Z06 because that was the only car out of the cars I test drove that I really liked, its only bad points were vague steering and poor gearbox, the performance however was earth shattering.

Beemer-5 , im on your side mate , you seem to be considering all sorts from your postings around the forum, and every car mentioned is great in its own right , in the end only you will know what car fits the budget and requirements , the Shelby ios possibly not priced right now , but in time could still fit the bill! in the mean time , enjoy whatever you decide upon!
I am sure i will!
The Works GP is my car number 101, so we're getting through them quite nicely!
