I can't get past this bloody elder dragon!
If you're at a relatively low level then just run like stink and deal with it another day. Going into a cave, mine or building seems often to make the dragon give up and shove off. If for example your character's an archer, then make sure you've got all archery-boosting enchanted kit, the best bow you can get hold of, good (ebony or Daedric) arrows and use a 'fortify marksman' potion when you go into battle. Same goes for melee weapons, more or less, but I always play archers.

Do actual characters come upon each other?
Depends if you have the sex mod installed.Ps. At the start when you exit the keep after following either Imperial or Stormcloak (doesn't really matter who you follow) when you exit you have a choice. They will ask you to follow them to Riverwood if you do you can start the main quest by talking to the contact in Roverwood, if you do not follow them you can postpone the main quest and do others (as long as you do not initiate the discussion with your contact in Riverwood, you can start the main quest at any time by doing so). What this means is you can postpone the arrival of the Dragons and do any other quests without getting randomly attacked and you can build up your fighting/magic skills first.

Was miffed about the online nonsense, I suppose they want to kill the 2nd hand games market.
The "online nonsense" does mean that your game stays patched though. Plus it's more convenient than SecureROM installing something close to a rootkit on your machine and forcing you to put the disc in every time you play like Fallout3 did. So swings & roundabouts I guess. FourWheelDrift said:

You can continue the main quest to the next city. You don't start getting dragons until you do the "Dragon Rising" quest. SPOILER

As soon as you speak to Gerdur (Stormcloak) or the blacksmith (Imperial) in Riverwood it triggers the process of dialogue that starts the main quest so if you don't start the main quest you will not get any Dragons. If you do speak to them and you go to Dragonsreach it triggers the dialogue for the first main quest "Before the Storm" that leads onto the Dragonstone quest and then Dragon Rising. If you do not speak to the Riverwood characters you can go freely anywhere in Skyrim including Dragonsreach without the main quest starting. the main quest quest starts as soon as you meet the contacts in Riverwood. This is the game save situation that many have set when creating new role play characters.

Anyhow, i'm in the keep, any hints, good or bad welcome.
The trader in Riverwood is handy to know early on as he will buy and sell almost anything. If you don't want to start the main quest, Riften is a good town to visit. Lots of side quests to do that will not get you killed early on. Find 10 of these items or find 5 of those items etc easy stuff. That gets you in with the townsfolk. Do the Skoomer quest for the Yarl and you can buy a house and get your first housecarl. You can safely store stuff in the chests in the house and its a good base if you want to join the Thieves Guild.
I've joined the Imperials on the Civil War quest. Trouble is my character is a little over-levelled for these missions.
Going to get the Jagged Crown I was told to scout out a safer way in. Instead I walked in, THUNK... THUNK... THUNK... THUNK... one-shot kills with the Bow of Awesome and ebony arrows. Ok, problem over. Next.
Got to say I'm a bit annoyed at being called "Auxiliary" and "Soldier". I happen to be leader of the Dark Brotherhood, the Companions and the Thieves Guild. I dunno, kids today eh? No respect.
Edit: Oh, and the Arch-Mage of Winterhold too. But since I can barely cast a fire spell and my Magika is still at 100, I don't really mention that one.

As will the chap in Whiterun (Belethor?). And the lady in Solitude (next to the posh frock shop).. (there is a reasonable general store in most large places)..And you can get a carriage to the main towns at the start to save travelling across land to find them and thereafter fastravel to them to sell your goods!

Fair enough but just because you have started the main quest does not mean you have to complete it. Like I say stop before you do Dragon Rising and you can go off and do what you like with no dragons, the quest just gets queued in my inventory. I did exactly that with my first carature. I built up my Orc so that when I did activate the dragons I was in better shape to handle them.Jasandjules said:

You can but then you end up only being able to fast travel to those towns. When you then get a quest to beat up a bandit you have to travel by foot or horse but if you have discovered locations on the way you can fasttravel to somewhere near to your destination.I suppose its all swings and roundabouts, you are going to have to do some running around at some point. I just really liked wondering round early on discovering places and getting my levels up killing preditors on the road, and the scenery blew me away when I first played it so wondering around was great for me.

Agreed. It was just a quick and easy way to be able to sell stuff on early on to build up the cash!I suppose its all swings and roundabouts, you are going to have to do some running around at some point. When I first started I was a we for money (not literaly) I would pick up everything. Get halfway though a dungeon and have to back out as my companion and I were over encombered. Sell everything then complete the dungeon. I am a lot more selective in what I take now. Cotty said:

I've always looked at weight v price ratio...... Quite often go through an entire dungeon and only pick up a few things (usually the magic weapon at the end and the gold and jewels of course) - leave all the cr***y swords and axes that weight 10 and are worth 18..... I also recently discovered that some potions I make at complete random are worth 300 each! So been making those and trading them for health potions etc... Oh and I found a Paralysis potion too, that was awesome nailing a giant with that and watching him fall.

It's far more amusing to wear them.
I like the way you think.
In fact, I think they are blind because the Raimant (sp?) Woman was busy telling me how s**e my clothes were despite the minor fact I was wearing the outfit she'd given me!!
