Mjol can die, she's done it on me before. Decided she was better off in the kitchen and cashing up back at the house so I married her and got a Companion to follow me. He's got a beard and just gets on with it.
According to the Wiki she is marked as Essential. Which means she can't die.

There's a quick test for this... it may end in divorce.

Good call. If you have the Sanguine Rose staff then that summons a pretty useful badass.
That was an interesting quest early (very low level) on to get the staff, not knowing beforehand what needed to be done. Im not usually bothered by spoilers but I went into that blind. Goat you say? eek

I didn't think a follower could die unless you killed them. I found that once a follower received a certain amount of damage they dropped to one knee to recover and were left alone by atackers. If you were to retreat from the battle they will just get up and follow you away. If you stay in the battle there is a risk of hitting them with your weapons and then they die. Just my observation.

Yes and no. They will fall to one knee, but if you don't draw the heat off them and they are not Essential then they will get killed if they continue to take damage whilst on one knee. I found that out the hard way with Lydia. Fortunately I had just saved so I reloaded.

She just sits around at Breezehome now, no doubt telling people she used to be the Dragonborn's sidekick till she took an arrow in the knee.

Sadly I've just found out my version of the game has a bug.

While merrily wandering around, killing dragons, trolls and giants, i grew weary of having to use my muscles to smite things. I know! I'll head over to the mages college at winterhold, they'll teach me how to kill things by just looking at them sternly!

Joyously i roll along, pass the test to get in (I mean please. I'm a level 38 nord, in full dragon bone armour, with legendary ebony war axes. I'm the harbinger of the companions and Thane of whiterun. Also, I've killed myriad dragons.) and start learning.

However, after a few quests, some Psyjit blokey apparently wants to talk to me. Fair enough, says I, and wander off to see who dares disturb me.

Sadly, as I get to the arch-mages quarters to speak to him, the game freezes. I can still move around, cast spells, summon atronachs and shout, theive, pickpocket and the like, but only in a certain area, nothing i can do makes the arch-mage talk to me. or the other bloke. and so i'm left with no-one but myself and Frosty, my trusty ice atronach for company.

So, menu, load, and ignore the quest :<

Ah thanks guys, so i'll need to do a bit of basic smithing then to get my perks up. Guess i'll be making a bunch of daggers then, come to think of it i think i have smithing gloves and enhancement amulets in one of my chests somewhere. idea
Smith daggers then enchant them and go off and sell them (enchant with absorb energy or something) that boosts enchantment and smithing that way..... And makes quite a bit of cash too, a 10 Dagger with a 10 Soul Gem = 250 or so.......
The best enchantment to get money is Banish. A bog standard dagger with banish and a petty soul gem sells for about 600 gold.

Menu, Load and try again perhaps?

Quest glitches are not unknown. If you're on the PC they can be manually advanced, and on the consoles there are sometimes workarounds posted on the Skyrim Wiki

See
Official wiki: http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Quests_%28Skyri...
Unofficial wiki: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:College_of_Winterh...

Generally the unofficial wiki is more useful for progressing stuck quests.

Aha. cheers for that. I've loaded it quite a few times, done more quests, done other quests, waited a few days and nowt. Its apparently a known bug (from the unofficial wiki: When you enter the Arch-Mage's quarters and go upstairs, time may stop yet Quaranir is not there, and you're stuck forever. )

I'm on PC so i'll try manually advancing the quest this evening.

Oh God no... I can't give this game that much more of my life! 130 hours in already but thought the end was in sight! It appears I was mistaken.

There is no end; the Radiant quests regenerate indefinitely.

Yes. The boring "go kill this person" Assasin quests are Radiant quests too.

Even if you finish the main quests you can always start again, see if playing a mage, archer or warrior gives you a different game experience.
