Well for example my 2-Handed skill level is 44, if I use Farkas to buy more levels, up to 49, it will say times trained this level 5/5 after buying the levels but the skill level is still 44.
That's how it is supposed to work if I'm not mistaken... I may be wrong through as I've not played in a while.

Yep, the higher level you are the longer it takes to level up and 5 training rounds are not enough to do it on it's own.

I know this game is old now, but I only just picked up a 2nd hand copy for a tenner (XBox) and started playing today.

I'm really impressed so far! Seems to be lots of scope to tailor your character's skills and abilities. Seems massive really.

Is the game really this "big" or do you end up maxing out skills and completing the game relatively quickly?

You might think you complete it quickly but check how many Christmases you've missed when you have. You might even miss London 2012.

You can't really finish. Oh you can do the main quest, complete all the guild quests etc but it has a Radiant quest system:

"The Radiant quest system is a quest generator that creates quests from a series of components such as location, enemy type, and reward".

You can't max out all the skills. You only get so many points so you have to choose which way you want your character to go and put points into those skills. No point maxing out a magic skill tree if your character is going around clubbing people to death with a mace. Likewise no point putting points into heavy armour and one handed if you are wearing mage cloaks and attacking from a distance. What that means is once you start playing you might want to start another character and see which works best for you, or alternate between them effectually doubling the game.

Have a read of this http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:First_Time_Players

I put skyrim down a whole who. Picked it up again yesterday and it seems I left myself having gone through one of the portals and can't find my way back out again.... After an hour or so of aimless wandering around I gave up.

Any ideas how to get back out of a portal and into the real world again.

Can anyone advise-

As a warrior character, is it worth me keeping the 3 or 4 magic staffs in my weapons inventory or shall I just ditch/sell them? (Staff do things like resurrect a fallen enemy to fight for you for 60 seconds or something)

I also have 2 x dragon scales and 2 x dragon bones which are heavy. Do I need them?

Dragon Scales and bones are used to make Dragonscale armour and Dragonbone armour (and weapons if you have Dragonborn) ditch them, or sell them. Dragonscale and dragonbone armour are ugly anyway.

Aren't there normal spells that can do everything the staffs can do? I never use staffs, except Wabberjack and even turning a big angry Orc into a chicken gets boring after a while. You're a warrior, ditch the magic smile

Thanks FWD.

Also, as a newbie, is it ever worth my while actually trying to fight a big Sabre tooth tigers or giant hairy monsters that I stubble across when exploring, or will I always get ruined? Should I just run away like a girl?

Sabre tooths are game, try and ignore giants, they can sometimes cause you to be hurled miles up into the air (bug, dependent on gaming platform).

Ps, try and get somewhere you can safely stash excess weapons, armour and loot. You don't have to buy a house early on but you can get storage that doesn't reset.

safe storage places - http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Category:Skyrim-Places-Sa...

Anise's Cabin is probably the easiest to use early on. Over the other side of the river from the Standing Stones between Helgen and Riverwood - http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Anise%27s_Cabin <-- see notes on storage. Just surprise kill her, she will be friendly so you can get behind her easily.

Whilst lower levels, run from Giants and most other things really. Sneaky sneaky to get kills.

Is anyone here playing the Elder Scrolls Online?

I haven't tried it yet, debating whether to pull the trigger or not. I loved Skyrim, but I don't think I am so keen on the multi player aspect.

Doesn't really look like a multiplayer skyrim to me, more like a bog standard MMO set in the elder scrolls world.

But I can't say for sure because I too refuse to pay for a monthly subscription.

Must admit I haven't bothered with the monthly subscription either. Perhaps if everyone boycotts it they will bring out a new Skyrim for the PS4 surely they won't miss that trick.
I felt short changed on the graphics with the PS3 my ancient gaming PC knocked spots off the PS3 as far as graphics were concerned which is stupid as it's one of the best landscape games on the market and the only thing going for it was the hand controller PS3 wise.

Just to clarify, in case anyone has the wrong end of the stick, ESO is not a Skyrim replacement. TES VI is still in the works, and ESO has nothing to do with the single player games.

Not even being done by the same company, and Beth are only lightly supervising what goes in.
