I really struggled though when I got to the Thalmor embassy. The guards were kicking my ass, I had to drop the difficulty to Novice and run
I'm concerned I may have picked the wrong race to start with. I went with Redguard - did anyone else pick them and have had a success? Any tips? Maybe I'm just too low a level (8).
yes you would struggle at lvl 8 at the embassy, as for the rase redguard i think thats what i chose, and are they not the race that have 50% magic resistance? after playing all the other eldar scrolls games i felt a 50 percent magic resistance buff was a good thing.I'm concerned I may have picked the wrong race to start with. and as others have said, when you get to a high level where you are reaching the sort of levels that you are not far away from maxing your character, it does not really matter what race you choose, as you are getting quite overpowered at level 50+ if you have spend your perks in the right places.

i plan to start this today - any noob tips?
Find the trainers (or look here to see where they are and what they train - http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Trainers ) and remember to get training on every level (and you have the money) as this will level you quicker, make you stronger or more powerful. You can increase your sneak level just by sneaking undetected anywhere. Including behind houses in towns, if no one sees you it increases. Same applies to other skills too, so you could hunt deer to increase archery.
But don't kill foxes, follow them they can lead you to locations or loot.
Don't kill chickens, it's considered a crime and the other chickens report you.
Be careful if you have a follower, they may not be killed in battle by the enemy but if they get in the way you strike them by accident when they are weak you can kill them. RIP Lydia etc...... no loss etc.....

It's a big game and best enjoyed by not rushing it. Frequent saves especially at first will avoid boring frustration in tricky situations. If you notice near by locations on your compass head towards them and they will be entered onto your map. This will then make then available to fast travel to later on in the game.
As expected, I'm completely hooked. B@stards.
Pablo is L7, ranged/stealthy type. Just made it to High Hrothgar (after numerous diversions) to learn the Voice stuff.
Do I have to grind/level all the crafting stuff, or just smithing?
Will be going for light armor.
Is there any point in levelling the magical talents just for self buffs and weapon enchantments?

I find the capture soul enchantments are useful in order to keep a nicely topped up stock of soul gems. And the paralyse enchantment can be useful on a bow when there are lots of enemies around and rushing at you at the same time.
Some of the magic stuff you get later in the game like the summon spectral assassin is really useful if you need a little hand vs some tough enemies but cba'd to tote around an annoying follower.

Enchantments are useful no matter what type of character you're playing as.The Magic skills are a really interesting, and different way to play the game if all you're used to is bashing & slashing (like I was).
Whilst pummeling enemies to death in one or two blows makes you feel like a boss......there is something quite satisfying about making everything run away from you in fear whilst sending 2 dremora lords after them baying to eat their hearts
Question for experienced 'Rimmers.
Having completed the Assassin's Guild storyline, I really liked having Shadowmere pop up as my horse - he had cool red eyes and some serious attitude. However, I've installed Dawnguard and done the mission going through spectral realm-type place to reach the lady vampire's mum and got the summon skeletal horse spell off the dude trapped in there on the way through. I summoned him to ride around in the realm and then, mission completed, returned to Skyrim.
Now, no Shadowmere! Does summoning the skeletal horse mean that Shadowmere is no longer available?
PS3 version if that makes any difference.
