Like I said, Farkas does not die, his character flag is set as essential until the end of the companions quest line because he gives you more quests later on himself.

In that case I'll just abandon him once he gets put out of action and run & hide, then sneak back thumbup

Pretty much. smile

There are 3 sorts of NPC.

Normal - can die. Most of Skyrim's residents are normal, including city residents if you want to keep them alive.

Protected - can die, but only from player attacks or AoE damage, and the former can be prevented by a quest reward in the Dragonborn DLC.

Essential - cannot die unless something is bugged.

I only ever encountered a dead NPC who shouldn't be once. It was the guy who starts the werewolf quest Ill met by Moonlight in Falkreath, he had been killed in a Dragon attack. Luckily I could resurrect him. It was the fact he'd been there for ages with a goat standing next to him that made me check, usually the bodies disappeared smile

If you're a sneaky ranged rogue/archer type, then you'll have to kite them one by one. Get further away from them. Find dark cover. Try to find a spot as far away from the cluster, or even some terrain or cover, so that only one of 'em has line of sight on you when you shoot. You'd be surprised how hard you are to detect in the dark, even with just a little Sneak.
Yeah this is my normal tactic, unfortunately the layout of the surroundings at this point pretty much precludes this. It is a small open square room with a single open staircase that is perfectly visible to everyone in the room.

Going up the staircase lets you back out of the room into a narrow corridor which is again no good for hiding.
Another thing to try is to summon a flame conjactfloatywotsit, partly to act as cannon fodder, but as they can move/float around fairly quickly they can distract the enemy sufficiently for you to attack them from behind while they pound the enemy with fireballs.

Yeah I saw this mentioned elsewhere, however I've not got any skills in magic beyond the starting ones as it's just not an aspect of the game that interests me at all- would probably be quite useful though!

I got through it last night though by using the tactic I mentioned above- I.e abandon Farkas to his fate then sneak back. It didn't go entirely to plan as once Farkas recovered he came sprinting back to me which gave away my position, but I got lucky with a sneak critical hit on one of them (from the 10% chance critical perk) and the other I managed to take down by furiously back-peddling whilst firing arrows. shoot

I only got away with it as I have the archery perk that staggers enemies 50% of the time- just enough to keep putting some distance between us- but even then I got struck twice and was left with less than 20% health!

Farkas took out the third (who had already been weakened by a sneak arrow hit) and was left with a similar amount of health.

The rest of the quest was a breeze, and the fight at the end against all the draugr was something of an anti-climax after that! hehe

I'm not using much magic for this char either, but an Atronach is pretty handy as an offtank, it's a free spell you learn when you go to Winterhold College, requires 132 magics.

It's a nice sense of achievement when you get over that hump!

Good stuff smile Couple of other things to keep in mind

If you're using one handed weapons use a shield - I've started using one for my sneaky bd character (as opposed to charging in dual wielding - not good when you've only got light armour and run out of stamina quickly!) and even at lower shield/block levels its quite effective, either block their attack or bash them and power attack in return. Alternatively if your one/two handed skills are equally low go use the more powerful two handed weapons instead as backup?

I think you can bash with a bow as well? Not actually tried this as I'll just whip out the sword(s)/shield at melee range but might be enough to get a shot or two in?

Yeah I'm working on the one-handed weapons too (with shield). My thinking is that not only will it let me deal with stuff close up it will also combine well with the sneak skill- I've already got the first perk that does 6 (I think) x damage for a sneak one-handed hit, and I'll definitely be going further down that path.

I'm playing as a wood-elf anyway and the stuff I'm focusing on is archery, sneak, light armour, and one-handed at the mo.

Get the shield Spellbreaker, its the best in the game. You will thank me when you start running into enemy mages.

Seen this thread earlier on so I went and bought Skyrim again. Digged the PS3 out.
2 hours into it it freezes. Lost all my gameplay when it had said it was autosaving a couple of time.
Not happy.

My OH is buggering off over the weekend, so I have tonight, Monday and Tuesday free.

To pass the time I've ordered Skyrim - Legendary Edition; which should be arriving in the next few hours biggrin

I played the vanilla version on the PC about 18 months ago and lost 2 months of my life. This time I'm playing on the PS3 with all the DLC.

Usually when I play games like this, I'm always the warrior type, with a massive sword/axe. I've decided this time I'd like to go more down the battle mage / swords with some magic route. Any recommendations on what race would be a good start point?

I'll probably end up dual welding small swords and occasionally nuking something with fire, I'd also like a summon companion, so I'm guessing this would push me into a mage class?

Would have thought something like a High Elf would be pretty good.

Just sparked up steam and started Skyrim again.

I played over 8 hours when I first got it but for various reasons never went further.

I am about to do the last quest of Act 1 and found my man standing exactly where I left him near the dragon that trolls him by killing him for laughs now and then.

Walking to the next area I was stood on a ledge overlooking a canyon with trees and hills in the distance with mist in the trees, and I realised I can walk there, always find that amazing.

really need to look into the High def modifications though

Just started a new save - got this for Xbox 360 and PC, but I much prefer playing modded over vanilla.

Running about 50 mods at the moment, and they're just my essentials smile

What mods are you guys running?

I'm not running a ton of mods (about 8 or so at the mo), but I couldn't do without them! Off the top of my head;

-Random encounters extra
-Immersive patrols
-Improved guard dialogue
-Potions etc only 0.1 weight
-Improved sounds - dungeons
-Improved sounds - towns & villages
-Dance of Death (custom set type & frequency of kill moves seen)
-Spend dragon souls to unlock perks

Dance of Death is easily my favourite- being able to set the frequency of kill moves up to 100% is just awesome and makes the game so much more cinematic. You can also adjust the type of moves that are seen etc. I also love how you can adjust it on the fly through the 'mod configuration' tab in the in-game options.

I also love the mod for spending dragon souls to unlock perks. I'm not really a magic/shout user so being able to use the dragon souls to unlock more of the combat-type perks is awesome, especially as at around level-32 the level-ups are now much more infrequent. It's also implemented in a very good way, adding a 'dragon stones' location to the map whereby you can customize how it works- such as the 'cost' of how many dragon souls are required to unlock perks etc.

This is still my first play of it (I only started a couple of months ago) and so wanted to experience the vanilla game before going mod crazy but next time I will definitely be trying the 'I am not the dragonborn' mod (or whatever it is called), and loading up on the graphical tweaks, along with the extra detailed town & villages and see just how much my PC can handle nuts

What would you say are the essential graphics mods?- taking into account that anything too involving to setup generally gets overlooked in favour of 'plug & play' mods...

Dance with Death is incredible, love that mod.

Graphically, there are a few different mods I use.

The Skyrim HD 2k Texture pack is a must, as is RCRN AE (Realistic Colours, Realistic Nights) or Climates of Tamriel for a lighting overhaul, plus an ENB like RealVision to tweak it further. Better Females, Better Males and ApaachiSkyHair for character visuals, alongside Enhanced Blood Textures and Footprints for a little immersion. WATER (Water And Terrain Enhancement Redux), Wet and Cold and Flora Overhaul will make the environment look lush.

This is all from memory, as I'm at work at the moment - I'll have a look when I get back at what I use
