I bought this game years ago and only played the first 10 minutes before a friend said it was about to be remastered so wait until then to play it.
Has the PC version had the graphics made pretty yet?

The Skyrim re-master/Special Edition is out this Friday for PC. If you own the legendary edition of Skyrim (original + all DLC) then it's completely free. If not, it is much cheaper to buy that now and get the Special Edition for free, than simply pay for the remaster...

I see there are lots of mods about, which ones would you recommend to make the game experience better for a first time player?

Rather than spending ages modding the original game right now, I would probably hold fire for a few weeks to let the mods catch up for the Special Edition version. This obviously includes as standard a ton of graphical stuff that you would have to do via mods/ENBs for the original game. And given that the likelihood for stability issues increases with the number of mods, it makes sense to run the version that requires far fewer mods from the outset.

Skyrim Special Edition is also 64bit (original is only 32) meaning it will be able to handle far more complex mods and should provide a far better base.

The downside is that one of the principal mods required for most other mods to work is the Script Extender (SKSE). Until this gets re-done to work with the 64bit version the Special Edition will be a long way behind the original in terms of variety of mods available. But judging by the pace of development in the modding community I can't see this taking long at all.

So in my opinion, download the Special Edition, get the SkyUI mod (which completely overhauls the inventory menu system to be PC-interface-friendly and should be compatible with the Special Edition), then simply get on and enjoy the game. If it's your first time playing it I wouldn't worry too much about many of the gameplay mods as these tend to add more variety for those who have already experienced everything in the standard game.

Then a few months down the line when you are ready to look at some of the mods available, the community should have got to grips with the Special Edition and the world (or rather the Skyrim Nexus) will be your Oyster. thumbup

Not sure how high a spec PC you need to run it, but my spec is here

(3.3MHz i5, 4GB GTX970)
That will be plenty to run a decently modded version and certainly the Special Edition. You should be able ot have everything maxed out and still get 60fps no problem I'd have thought.

A 4GB gpu is actually overkill for Skyrim as it's my understanding that it can't make use of all of the V-RAM anyway!

Free up some more RAM or increase FPS in tundra regions, if you are using Unbelievable Grass Two lower res version.

I just looked at the files and the Egrass02xxx.dds textures are all 349k in size except EGrass02Tundra.dds which is the full 5MB. All meshes are the same so they are interchangeable.

I have just copied the EGrass02fallforest.dss and renamed it to EGrass02Tundra.dds and pasted it in to textures/landscape/grass folder

If you want greener tundra copy the EGrass02.dds

If you want to add it via Nexus Mod manager just pack the new smaller textures into the folder structure data/textures/landscape/grass/EGrass02tundra.dds on your desktop and zip/rar it up give it a name like Unbelievable Grass patch so it appears next to the original mod in the mod list and activate it. If it asks you to overwrite you know you've got the folders right smile

Huh, seemed I had all the other versions as got the special edition free today which is cool as I have Enderal over my standard Skyrim.

Question I have is I can't seem to get my Nvidia / monitor to set 60FPS as maximum - can anyone offer advice?

My Monitor refreshes at 144FPS and I'm trying to set it as application controlled but then can't find an option in Skyrim SE to set FPS

Cheers in advance

Phil

Not at my PC to check but Google the same problem but use Fallout 4 as the search. As it may be the same solution.

NVidia control panel 3d settings or in Nvidia Inspector
"Triple Buffer" to ON.
"Max frames render ahead" to 1.
"V-Sync" on.

Not started SE yet but I've had a look at the ini files and they are just like normal Skyrim so usual tweaks should work for grass, trees and others.

Since I just found that clean Skyrim saves (with no mods) can be loaded into SE I loaded in a Riverwood clean save to have a look around. And so that I don't have go through that cart ride and Helgen again.

Looks ok, just empty hehe and the water shader could do with an update.

Everything I am trying seems to be working (not sure about Water though)

JK's Skyrim all in one and Realstic Grass (with the ini additions) working as is Enhanced vanilla trees. Anything that isn't a BSA should work and isn't reliant on SKSE. Even BSA mods could be unpacked to loose files and work maybe.

My copy of Skyrim for the PS4 arrived this morning and I've had the chance to play it for a while. In the days of Oblivion I got fed up with my high end gaming PC continually crashing resulting in me losing my progress.
I was so fed up with this that I switched to the PS3, stating the obvious the graphics were 2nd rate to say the least compared to my gaming PC but at least it didn't crash and I convinced myself that the gameplay was more important.
With the PS4 and a decent 4K telly I have to say the graphic detail is on about par with my high end PC of so long ago, as I've been busy with Fallout I'd more or less forgot the plot of Skyrim but I am enjoying it but I have to say it's about bloody time.
Still got a long way to go to get anywhere near what has been posted clip wise on here.

Bloody hell, they haven't wasted any time!

I'm still extremely happy with my recently re-modded original- I'm about 20 hours into this playthrough running just over 80 mods and only experienced 3 crashes so far. Also getting 50-60 fps basically everywhere and running the ENB it looks what can only be described as stunning!

This is one of my favourite shots so far

I cannot believe a game from 2011 can look this good.

I've been messing about with SE.

Have all these installed + Noble HD and have better FPS around Riverwood than my normal Skyrim.

The People of Skyrim Cutting Room Floor patch needs an edit (if you are using it). Using SSEdit from the nexus you have to copy into the Data folder the Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition patch.esp so that SSEEdit loads all the plugins up, then click on the cutting room floor esp and right click to edit it's master, find where it says Unofficial Skyrim Lgendary etc... and change it the word Legendary to Special close to save and delete the Legendary esp from the Special Edition data folder.

Nothing using physics works, any needing the MCM menu or SKSE as we know but it looks like everything else does.

Might actually take this opportunity to use Open Cities (no JK Cities just the towns/villages).

Not doing a playthrough on this, just getting it ready as over the next few days more will get updated, lighting mods, follower/NPC mods and most importantly gameplay changes. If I don't get dark nights and dark caves & dungeons I'll stick with old Skyrim for now.

I'm playing through, started another character.
Impressed with graphics, noticed more interaction from npc's.

Is there any issue with downloading Special Edition on Steam even though I intend to carry on playing my modded original version for a while yet? I assume it downloads it to a separate folder so there shouldn't be any conflicts?

No issues at all, it's a full separate install. If you have any unmodded saves you can copy them over tot he SE and they should work there as well

Uninstalled People of Skyrim on SE got a funny coloured glitch outside Rorikstead. Apart from that everything has been fine. Even installed the v1.31 (non MCM, no SKSE) version of Lanterns of Skyrim, that was fine.

As mentioned above it creates a new folder in My Documents called Skyrim SE for saves and new ini files so you lose nothing and nothing gets overwritten.

Missed this earlier. Yup I found out how to add the SE executable into Nvidia inspector so was able to frame limit it there.

Cheers

If you want to test location mods out quickly to see if they conflict or even work with SE without travelling by foot, open the console type: help "<name or location>" 4

It should return CELL lines for that location. Type : coc <cell> and you will go there, like fast travelling but without a time change.

eg. coc roriksteadexterior01
