Wow just got battlefield 3 for PC after spending a bit of time with it on the Xbox.
On the Xbox I thought I was reasonably good with my kill count just above my death ratio, but moving over to PC and I suck! I think it took me about 30mins of play before I even got a kill, definitely going to have to put some major time into this
PS this is my first real online shooter for PC any tips would be appreciated, also if anybody fancies adding me online my origin name is the same as here

Tried again last night and much better managed about a 11:7 K/D, that was on the bigger maps, i much preferred the larger maps as IMO i think strategy plays a bigger part in it, with the smaller maps it feels like chaos!
The bigger maps are definately easier on the K/D- although I avoid playing the standard maps on 64player servers (strategy goes out the window in these area weapon/sniper fests), 32 or 48 is plenty.Saying that, at lower levels I tried to not worry too much about the K/D ratio as I didn't find it very condusive to a good play style (made me overly defensive) and so wasn't particularly helpful for racking up all the objective based XP. I think up to about level 25-30 or so I had an overall K/D ratio of around 0.5, so not that great! However, once I became a lot more familiar with the maps, preferred weapons etc, this improved considerably and 95% of the time I now finish a round with >1.
The problem is, when your total number of kills & deaths is in the thousands and your only getting say 20 or so each round it takes forever for the overall ratio to move- at 200 odd hours in although it's steadily increasing I'm still only up to .85 or something!
And lastly, your K/D ratio will also be very dependent on your play style- as somebody who rarely uses vehicles my K/D is generally going to be worse than that of the tank jockeys, or someone who spends almost every round sat in the gunner seat of the attack helicopter- or even someone who routinely plays as a sniper. Therefore I tend to take it all with a pinch of salt- ultimately it's only really something for the TDM crew to worry about- but I'm fully aware how frustrating it can be to keep getting killed in a round without exacting retribution!

What's the obsession with K/D?
I could sit in a AA at base all map and get 1 kill 0 deaths every game and have an inf. K.
I've played games where we won by 500 tickets or more without anybody on our side with a +ve K.
Exactly, in anything other than TDM it's not particularly relevent- to me however it's annoyingly become a way of quantifying my frustration when I have one of 'those' games!I could sit in a AA at base all map and get 1 kill 0 deaths every game and have an inf. K.

Oddly enough I don't tend to think about it when I'm playing well!
Imo, it's not really indicative of anything other than personal performance, which is why it's held in such contention on an otherwise team focused game.
Arguably a positive ratio's better than a negative one, but that equation doesn't factor in the guy who's scarified his just to operate the SOFLAM for the entire round, solely to ensure that his team doesn't encounter any pesky vehicles.
That said, when in doubt, kill everything!
