Zaxxon said: Good, I fricken hate the company. Rip off prices and buy back, proper moronic staff, and they stung me twice on games that were s te. I use Gamestation if I have to buy from the street, otherwise download only or mail order. I still use them to trade games in, the prices are pretty rubbish to be honest. I traded in some fairly new games once and the price I got for them would of been much more agreeable if the cashier had punched me square in the face as a means of payment. However, that is the price you pay for convenience. I could of almost certainly got more, for one game, by selling on gumtree than I did for the whole lot in GAME. But that usually takes weeks and lots of badly spelt emails asking "lowest price for this?" when it clearly says the price in the advert. Could of put them on eBay as well, but after eBay and PayPal have had their fill you're left with about 50 pence. Still I've had some bargains from GAME. < £20 for Fallout 3 GOTY (the one with all the additional downloadable content) was great. That is litterally months of gameplay right there. I'll be sad if they do go because I almost exclusively buy second hand games these days as the vast majority of games are just not worth the £40 opening price. RAGE is a great example, it literally ends just when you think its getting going. Felt massively short changed on that one! Uncharted on the other hand... worth every penny! Just gotta do your research.

It's a shame really as I must be one of the few lucky ones who lives near to a store with staff who actually seem to care about customer service and have good knowledge of the stuff they sell. I've even got a couple of them in my xbox friends list.
Despite the problems I (like all) have with their pricing structure in the company with regards to trade ins I will be sad if these guys and girls loose thier jobs.
Saying that though I will be keeping a close eye out for the closing down sale (and yes, got my ticket to the hell train booked a long time ago)

We've two stores nearby.
Went in to the closest to tradein my old Xbox 360, manager there said "Sorry I can't take it as you don't have batteries for teh wireless controller, and I need 2 days to test teh system."
Fine, took Xbox 360 away to the other store and had received teh funds for in with 5 minutes of being in the store.
As others have said though, no great loss. If I want a game, I'll get it from Amazon or Steam.

If GAME goes... there will be no none-supermarket shop in Lboro to buy games from. HMV of course sells lots of other things.
There was one, independant games shop just of the main highstreet. A sort of CHiPs equivalent that took in trade ins and sold new games as well, but they've recently shut up shop and consolidated with a shop in Leicester. We dont have a gamestation either. So it'll be just Tesco, HMV and Argos.
EDIT: Oh wait... there is a CEX on the highstreet now. But this is literally one step up from cash converters and constantly has chav's standing outside it looking at the (likely stolen) second hand smartphones and computers on display. Its not a shop I like going in, lets put it that way.

What's your point? The supermarkets are cheaper and there are plenty of online shops to buy from...again where the prices are more competitive.

I have bought quite a few games from CEx and i've found it quite a good experience. Every game i have ever bought from there has had a near on brand new box and unscratched disc. You say about the chav side of things but the last time i bought something from my local shop there were a couple of young chavs trying to trade in a dodgy camera. Turns out they had carefully cut the serial number from another item and stuck it on the camera as when the store did the security check it came up as a sat nav unit or something. Lets just say they left rather promptly. Says to me they are pretty hot on nicked stuff.

Its a shame as you cannot replace going into shops and browsing for compulsory purchases. This has led to the discovery of some great games for myself that I would not otherwise have found on line as I would not have searched for them

Their anti-theft measures seem the most through, they were the only ones who asked for all the details when I had some games took friday night at some point.

Its sad but not surprising to see this happen, its a sign of the times unfortnately.
I could go onto Amazon right now and with one click buy MW3 for around £10 cheaper than in most stores and not have to get off my fat arse doing so!

Limited selection for one... they have like the top 20 games and thats it. In GAME they have all sorts and the pre-owned section can be a gold mine. Granted this isnt where the money is made supposedly, but going off their trade in set up, maybe it is.

Either that or it's someone who knows how to realistically interpret what every analyst worth their salt is saying. They're knackered, even armchair experts can tell that after a cursory glance at their shares dropping like a lead balloon, recent announcements (like the £18m pretax loss and supplier credit lines being pulled, rent being due, april looming, yadda yadda yadda) and see that the writing has been on the wall for a while. Journalism won't be the end of them, poor trading conditions and massive losses will.

Never understood the gaming retail industry. Nearly every independant retail shop that has opened near me has been dead in less than 2 years. And now one company I thought would always be around is going down the pan too. For an industry that outranks the movie industry I can never understand why it suffers so at the POS. A DVD or CD shop will be there for years, yet gaming seems to suffer quite badly.

With games, most are around the £50 level, so you don't go in on a whim to just flick through them and see what's about. That sort of purchasing is just as easy online, and usually cheaper.

There was another one as well I can't remember it went so long ago. Neither HMV or Game offer a superior product over what you can do online with other retailers. The only reason I ever go in either is 5 minutes not spent in a clothing store if I happen to be shopping with the Mrs.

Irresponsible journos. Considering who it quotes and the backroom scenario, it's nothing to do with irresponsible journo's. They are reporting in past tense, very much so, the pan is already greased bar a miracle.
