Well now, if I talked about iPad, iPhone, Android and old versions in general, I would have to eat myself in order to stop myself from falling into enemy hands. So as I'd really rather eat a napalm-hot curry than any part of my own anatomy, I can't say a word.

Actually, anybody that knows me knows that I'd really rather eat a napalm-hot curry than, well, anything really, so that means nothing.

But needless to say, we have plans to keep our fans (and ourselves, to be honest), happy whilst waiting for Reincarnation.

I remember the mission where you are in the city, about a mile away from the quarry truck driving head on at each other. I thought it would be impossible, until I crashed into it head on and somehow wasted it...

Was that truck in C2? I remember there being a truck like that in the demo for the Splat Pack for Carma 1.

I forgot all the little Carma frustrations, like when the AI get stuck upside-down underwater. You have to find an underwater ability and push them into mines.
Or just drive off and leave them too it, at which point they recover... We just didn't want them to recover in front of you, as a disappearing car would look weird, even though do it yourself.

I think it would also be annoying if they recovered in front of you, as you might WANT to push them around underwater...!

Might be good if there was a "Console" which had an info feed thing, like on Modern Warfare etc, where in the bottom left corner it gives you a scrolling list of action, i.e. who's shot who with what. If you did a similar thing in Carmageddon then this feed would inform you when an opponent passed a checkpoint, or was wasted, or recovered etc.

That way you can work out where they are a bit faster, and also be notified that they HAVE recovered, so you can go find them and smash them some more.

What do you think?
Carma II did do this with the info screen, which you could cycle through all your opponents - but hardly anybody ever used it!

Original Carmageddon coming to iOS and Android this Summer. SWEET! Well done chaps!!
Thank God we've announced this now! I must admit, I'd been on a bit of the naughty grape juice whilst on holiday when I dropped those heavy hints in this thread, which I then felt really guilty about! Glad that it's now in the open.

It's VERY cool by the way. Just fixing the last few bugs right here, right now.

It's terrible news to me. I only have PSP and Vita. frown
I don't think that Sony would approve it - they don't want old games like this on those platforms (even though we - well, I actually - did the Atari coin-op classics on PSP).

Carma:Reincarnation on Vita would be very cool though, and we will consider it. A bit chicken-and-egg of course, as like most of our industry, we don't want to support it until it takes off, but it won't take off until it has support from people like us.

The video of it does look awesome.

In the press release it mentions that it'll be free on the itunes app store in the first 24 hours, is that the same for androids too? Don't want the people suffering from iSmugness to have all the fun wink
I've just chatted amongst us here to check that we can do this, and the word is yes, it will also be free for the first 24 hours on Android.

Hang on, you're going to have to simplify this for complete idiots like me...

I can download Carmageddon on my Android phone for free??? Oh my god, when is it available?

Over the moon!
"Summer", although the Android development is a bit behind iOS, so it's likely to be late summer, maybe even spilling into the autumn. If you miss the "first 24-hours for free offer", then it still won't cost you much (we've not set final prices yet).

How did I miss this!

I spent most of my childhood on Carmageddon! It is YOU who is responsible for my warped mind hehe

Also I loved the physics engine in Carmageddon 2, was great fun being able to destroy the cars in so many different ways biggrin

Will definitely be getting the next one smile
Glad to have been of service sir!

By "getting the next one" I am of course sure you really mean "pledging on Kickstarter".... ;-)

My $50 pledge is paying off!! I have an android phone, ipad and iphone, so that will keep me occupied till the real deal comes out!!

Batwick - any chance of some PH'isms making it into the game? maybe a can of "red cow" energy drink as a projectile weapon or whatever?!, a "nuke them from orbit" powerup etc?
Maybe! I'd have to fight the rest of the design team though - although Neil "Nobby" Barnden drives 911s and Dave "Trifle" Hosier (the Exec Producer on the game) has a Sagaris. So it may be possible, albeit with a lot of tutting...

We're hoping for more - maybe $600k - as typically Kickstarter campaigns tend to get a final surge towards the deadline.

Every bit helps, as developing a game like this actually costs millions. So we've got to put in every penny that Kickstarter doesn't!

Yep, and I've celebrated by getting the Tuscan on the road this afternoon after nine months of total rebuild. The beast lives! I'd post photos if this bloody iPad let me. I'll post some tomorrow.

Hello and good luck with Carma.

I was a big fan at the time (still am), and played both 1 and 2. In fact My brother and I played the time-limited demo of Carma 1 over and over and over and over. Which is a sign of a good game! Aside from the open world, one thing really stands out to me as the number one factor in their appeal. The Physics. The physics felt very very realistic in terms of how the cars spun, landed, took off, rode over bumps (or peds). I'm not sure who did the phsyics model for you and whether this was recognised at the time, but it was detailed, fault free and I really think it's important. I admit that physics is rarely recognised as being important - because people are trained to notice graphics and gore and things like that. I just think that's because we haven't woken up to how lifelike physics taps into something. As humans when something is very lifelike we can tell and it taps into our brains. It's also pretty clear from looking at youtube that the physics is what makes a game such as GTA so popular. Likewise angry birds... Cut the rope... Half life 2. All successful recent games with a LOT of attention to detail paid the physics. Even in the casual gaming genre it's there. With good physics a game will stand out from all the other shiny graphics alternatives that are already out there (pretty poor efforts most of them and not selling too hot either).

Good luck with it!

While I'm on the topic, anyone here tried to program physics before and able to give me a idea how much degree level maths is involved (if any)? In my mind it's A level maths and a bit of extra thinking, with some creative thinking to turn that into code... the hard part is to get it to run at a decent speed on the hardware.

Thanks. We always set out to have the best physics, but it turned out better than that as we hired a young genius called Kev Martin who was just finishing his PhD In physics - at the age of 22. Says it all really!

That was in 1996, and he's still working for us (and on Carmageddon:Reincarnation) today.

I know I'm biased, but I still think that that Kev's system - even then - is better than that used in blockbuster games to this day.

In terms of attempting it, well there are a bunch of tiers here, each of which requires you to be more and more of a Kev:

1) 3D over 2D. Any old fool can write a 2D system like that in Angry Birds.

2) Optimisation - make it work in the real world, on real hardware.

3) Make it work all the time. Making it work in easy cases is easy. But I still see objects bouncing around and gaining energy even in Skyrim. What happens when multiple objects are all in collision at once? How do you stop them from doing things that look STUPID?!

4) Now for the killer: network physics. Make physics work over a laggy network connection and you really are a Kev!

When I was growing up in the south of England, "a Kev" certainly didn't have any idea about physics hehe
I know - that's never been lost on us either. Why couldn't he have been Dr Erasmus Martin or Dr Maximillian Martin or something. Anything but "Kev". On the plus side though, at least he is "Doctor Martin".... ;-)

Jesus I hope he never gets to read this!

Never been a pc gamer but can remember the hype when the originals were being released. I will be pledging and getting a copy of this.

Having never played the originals and looking at the idea of the game, is there a turbine powered car (similar design to the batmobile ) that as you hit an innocent pedestrian they get sucked through the turbine and sprayed out the back in a fountain of mushy pulp.

You should also have mothers with prams that when hit she get fked up but the baby flies into full view and out of shot, obviously landing safely somewhere out of shot wink
Oh yes, we have plans for this sort of thing. Snow-blowers are great too, as are combine harvesters.

Originally we wanted to have a pregnant woman ped whose foetus would splat on your windscreen, only to them be suddenly jerked away as the umbilical was still connected. However one of our artist's wives said he'd have to quit if we did this, and we realised ourselves that this was probably stepping over the 'funny' line. I do like the idea of the pram and the baby surviving though...

I'd prefer it if it was the local butcher's raw liver delivery, but the delivery van has broken down, so the butcher's mum offers to help using her old pram...

Haha its not that far over the "jesus" reaction

Just have a big titted bimbo bird who's silicone implants splat the screen that leave a nice greasy patch on the road. Or send people in wheelchairs on a turbocharged ride into oblivion. The frantic screaming and waving arms from an in car shot would make me chuckle
We really want to do wheelchairs and bicycles this time. Technically it's a bloody nightmare though, as you have a rag-doll physics object (the rider) insecting another physics object (the chair or bike). This causes all sorts of physics code problems when you collide with them.

We will definitely try though!

Pretentious pr!cks on Segways would be good too...

Thanks. Sat here watching the total. We've got a sweepstake going within the Stainless Kickstarter team. I went for the highest at $639k, but I reckon I'll lose. Sim went for $625k - looks like she's on course to win the.... errrr.... nothing!

You'd need a Northern-to-English dictionary. The missus and I spend a lot of time in Cumbria, and believe me, Sim makes it sound like the Home Counties :-)
