Hi - I'm Patrick Buckland, the MD of Stainless Games Ltd, and a user of this site since it was called PetrolHeads in the 90s. Back then, we produced the classic PC and Mac game Carmageddon, which I was personally lead programmer on. I got a right b*llocking from Ben Samuelson at TVR for including my Cerbera in Carma II without licensing it from them ;-)

Anyway, we're still around as a completely independent developer, and recently bought back the rights to Carmageddon. We've just launched a Kickstarter campaign to try to get it funded without involvement from any big corporations or interfering publishers:

Legend!

Made my day reading this!! I'll be dropping a cheeky donation towards the cause next week I reckon! I've countless great memories from C1/C2 back in the day.

Might be worth a shot punting a link to the Kickstarter project page onto Reddit, if it's not been done already - there's a huge following of the previous titles on there, and you'd be likely to reach a huge international crowd.

I wish you guys all the best with this, I'd love nothing more than to see an updated Carmageddon asap! thumbup

Yes, we thought this was hilarious. The Daily Hate gave us the hardest time of all back in the 90s, but this article couldn't have been better PR if we'd written it ourselves!

Hopefully there will be mod tools? I spent way too many hours making cars and stuff for C2 with the #carma guys..

Hi Patrick,

I know this thread is about funding Carmageddon Ressurection, and I've pledged $50 already. But my copy of Carmageddon 2 arrived today and I can't get it to run on Win 7. (I've tried right click on the "Setup.exe" and gone to properties, and "run in compatibility mode" for Win95. But it doesn't do anything.) Any ideas? I need a fix whilst I'm waiting for next Feb for the new game!!

Cheers

I would like an option to turn off all the power-ups and just have pure metal to metal carnage.

One of my favourite games ever was Carma 1. Utterly bonkers, but beautiful physics, which quite frankly you cocked up in Carma 2. Carma 1 was one of the few games where you felt the car hitting stuff and (weirdly) felt like it handled like a real car would. Just brilliant to play. Carma 2 had that sliding over ice feeling that an awful lot of car games had (put me off the car game genre permanently to be honest)

Will pledge, but what I want is Carma 1 on a state of the art graphics engine - same gameplay, same physics, same wet yourself hilarity, same Daily Maul baiting evilness!

Don't fk this up please!

Ok, I'm all sorted now. Thanks to those who encouraged/linked to look for myself. I managed to find some instructions (a little convoluted and links out of date) but I've worked it out, so here's an updated guide which I can confirm works, because I've just written up the steps I've followed and the game is working for me!

For the benefit of the other members who might also be in the mood for a hit of retro-carnage, here's how I got it to work:

Steps to play Carmageddon 2 in Win7:
(Paraphrased from here http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=20780 )

  1. Create a local folder in a root directory called "CarmaCD". I have a drive called S:\ in windows, so I made "S:\CarmaCD"
  2. Copy all the files from the Carmageddon 2 CD into "S:\CarmaCD". (Note, don't copy a folder called "Desktop.ini" or "LaserLok" as they will cause the copy process to fail.)
  3. Navigate to "S:\CarmaCD" and double click "setup.exe" and install to the default directory.
  4. When it asks for QuickTime3. Say "No."
  5. When it asks for "DirectX6". Say "No."
  6. Uncheck "view readme", Finish. (Then say "this program installed correctly" if windows asks you.)
  7. Download nGlide from here: http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide
  8. Install nGlide.
  9. Navigate to the Carmageddon install directory which is normally "C:\Program Files (x86)\Carmageddon II Carpocalypse Now" and backup the original "Carma2_hw.exe" by renaming as "Carma2_hw.exe.original".
  10. Download Carmageddon 2 "XP/Vista/W7 patch" from here: http://www.carmajunkies.com/downloads/index.php?ac...
  11. Unzip and place in the install directory (replaces the one you renamed.)
  12. Right click on the "Carma2_h2.exe", goto "Properties" > "Compatibility" set i) "Run in compatibility mode for Win98/ME" and ii) "Run in 640x480 screen res".
  13. Don't run "Carma2" instead run "Carma2_hw.exe" directly to lauch the game. (You'll probably want to put a link to "Carma_2hw.exe" on your desktop or something.)

Will definitely be pledging to this, how much depends on how much of a disaster my MOT is next week!
1&2 are definitely a couple of my favourite games ever, and I'm looking forward to this one. Though I think you'll struggle to beat the awesome soundtracks to the first two!
Good to see also that most folk who played it didn't go on a road rage rampage around town. The papers must have been gutted! hehe

Our latest generation driving physics engine is our best yet (we still have the same guy working for us - got his doctorate in physics at only 22, whilst already coding Carma 1). The handling in the Reincarnation prototype is brilliant, and although I'm obviously biased, let me stress that I was always quite critical of our work in this respect. It's such a difficult paradox - trying to do a proper physics sim whilst simultaneously making it fun to play. And all without that most critical sensory input of all: the inner ear.

The Reincarnation handling feels fantastic though. It's as if it knows what you want it to do without you even having to control it. Definitely Dr Kev's finest hour.

Thanks for the reply and quoted for posterity - will hold you to this one! wink

Good luck with the funding, hope it gives you what you need.

Tuesday BUMP! I've been playing Carma 2 LOADs since working out how to install it on Win7! So really hoping some more people join in and we can get to the target to make the Reincarnation.

PS - Can anyone remember how to get back to play old levels in single player? Each time I load I only have the choice of the 3 races on my current screen, and can only play the old one by loading an old save... not ideal.

I've been playing it a lot (tiny winy resolution!) too since reading and donating on this thread!

You can tick the Auto-Load box on settings and that'll automatically load you're most recent save file each time you log-on. I'm still working through the levels (killing the bigger dumper truck at the mo)but I can't remember what happens at the end with playing back old levels.

What was the program that upload new car models? Will have to hunt that down.

If I remember rightly, everything is unlocked when you complete the game, but it is quite likely that I am wrong!

For the record, this structure is something else that we've already identified as a bad design decision. Future releases of Carma will not prevent you from replaying 'old' events.

This stuff is a lot easier with 15 years of hindsight, I can tell you!
