Hmm, those screen grabs tell a story.
Good old E3 promising cool new tech, then consoles drag us back to the early 2000's....sigh.
Remember when PC's laughed at the graphics the consoles tried to emulate, now we have to run poorly optimised ports of games designed to work on 60hz TV's when PC monitors can go much much higher on resolution and refresh rate.
I remember when smoke effect particle calculations made the jaw drop....now its all just sonic with flash 3d....

Only managed about 3-4 hours so far but I'm liking it a lot.
Sure, the cars don't handle like real ones but then I can't think of an open world game where they ever have. No complaints from me, handbrake works just fine too.
Early days with the missions, think I've only done the first one at the stadium. Be careful you don't do what I did initially though. You get points to unlock abilities but I didn't realise that there were several different types available until after I'd used the first five points up on upgrading my hacking skills.
ATM is a good one though. Instead of a couple of hundred $'s I now sometimes get thousands instead.

The issue is all the games shown at E3 are usually rendered on pretty high end PC's, but than ramped right down for console hardware but the pc versions are taken from the console versions, madness!
Aliens Colonial Maerines being the most recent pile of ste that looked amazing at E3, but was a totally different game come delivery.

I'm finding the Watch Dogs 'world' much more immersive and 'generally believable' than GTA - although I haven't played 5 - but the 5 map looks pretty dull to me. Does anyone know how accurate it is to Chicago? For me the cut scene graphics are just awful - almost embarrassing. But the game play is solid. Although the foot chases of criminals is pretty boring and samey.

GTAV was a beautiful and immersive world, but once I'd completed the story I switched it off and haven't gone back. There just wasn't enough else going on to keep me interested. Plus that map is so huge that I'm just not going to bother trying to complete any background collect-all-the-st mission. Searching a relatively small world (GTAIII, Vice City) for hidden packages is doable, but searching a vast open world is just a chore.
Saints Row III was so packed with side missions and enjoyable stupidity that although the world wasn't as detailed or convincing as GTAV I played it for far longer.
Just Cause II I loved as well, for similar reasons as for Saints Row III - I think the fact that it forced you to do a load of random stuff in order to unlock the next story missions helped keep it varied (plus I just loved that grappling hook - surviving a 10,000 ft freefall from a helicopter by firing the grappling hook into the ground just before you hit it outstupids most things in Saints Row III).
I've got Watch Dogs winging its way to me as we speak. Will I like it?

I think an open world game lives or dies on the stuff you can do outside of (and/or after) the core story.

I think so, there appears to be a lot of side story stuff. One of the gimmicks is a QR code mission. There's a few dotted around the city you can see in the cameras, first one I found I was curious to see if my phone recognised it and boom (although it really doesn't give you much, the result is in the spoiler).GTAV was a beautiful and immersive world, but once I'd completed the story I switched it off and haven't gone back. "G1gg1L3s... 1L... IL... Get it?"
Absolutely no idea what it means at this stage but when you find them all it unlocks a new mission
Very gimmicky, but it's something different and pretty cool.
