XCOM Enemy Unknown

I feel a bit dirty writing this, but I've become quite attached to my squad (or at least their skills from levelling up) and have become a bit of a save game monger. I think I'd struggle if I weren't TBH. Am I the only one who saves regularly, and isn't above loading a game 3 times to survive a mission with a full squad?

I play ironman (usually classic as the crippled AI on normal annoys me) so no save spamming possible. If you get it wrong you just have to take it on the chin.I didn't play it on ironman but I never went back to an old save anyway, so I might as well have done...just took defeats on the chin and carried on, was a bit cheesed off when I was nearing the final mission and lost one of my only 2 survivors from the beginning...but the other one made it.
been a while since I played but I'm thinking of having another go..

Hi mate,
I loved the original X-COM and I love this one more, and have completed it twice (Iron Man Classic most recently) so have learned a few things. In fact I only lost two soldiers the second time round.
Your early priority is satellites. Build them ALWAYS, and if you can, launch them on paniced countries just before the monthly reviews.
In terms of in game tactics, there are loads of guides online that talk you through research builds and in battle tips. What I have found is:
- Overwatch is key. Move one squad member forward, and advance no others further. Overwatch the lot. Theres nothing worse than on your final move discovering a group of mutons that flank you
- Use explosives A LOT. Ignore the scientist, she talks b0llocks. First few rounds, grenade the 'nids, then use your heavys to blast their cover away with rockets
- Level up a sniper to get squad site as soon as possible. You can use grenades to aid this. Once done, get them onto higher ground with good visibility and leave them there
- Advance with assault troopers. Rapid reflex is very useful
- Don't worry too much about capturing the insider. Get researched up, get good satellite coverage, take your time. Before using the arc thrower, soften the target up with a pistol first. Increases the chances of a successful stun
- Scopes are very useful, are you using them? Replace grenades with them
- Once you research lasers, you are in a strong position. Keep units overwatched and covering each other and lack of armour shouldn't matter too much
If you need tips on the final mission, let me know. I've mastered it
This guy above knows his stuff, only hing I would disagree with is don't use explosives unless it's your only option. My reason for that is to sell the weapon fragments etc.I loved the original X-COM and I love this one more, and have completed it twice (Iron Man Classic most recently) so have learned a few things. Using grenades and missiles removes cover, is accurate and gives you the best chance to kill those pesky 'nids as the early guns are utter pants!

You have a point.... but In my experience, keeping your team alive is a priority over getting weapon fragments, at least in early game.

My current game I'm totally bottlenecked on weapon fragments; have loads of cash, alloys and elerium, but less than 100 fragments. Seems to be more of a problem on classic than normal.Using grenades and missiles removes cover, is accurate and gives you the best chance to kill those pesky 'nids as the early guns are utter pants!

I've never noticed that! Normally I lack cash. I find the special ops missions where you kill 15+ thin men give plenty of fragments. Creepy buggers Getting the hang of it now! 3 in game months in and got to the mission to infiltrate the facility. Going to hold off on it for a bit and kit out my team, get some more soldiers a couple of ranks up and put some more satellites in the sky.
Great game, glad i stuck with it. Thought the same with Dark Souls. Sometimes its just a case of getting used to the games 'rules'.
