Call of Duty: Black ops II

I have read through forums for a while, and each time a new COD comes out I see a pattern emerging. I know some will disagree but everyone is different and have their own opinion but, it seems that the overall majority of people still rate Call of Duty 4 as the benchmark and still the best edition of the series so far.
I'm not sure what others think but I feel that it was the simplicity of the game that was its charm. It was of course a huge leap from Call of Duty 3 in terms of graphics and playability but it had an overall polished feel that gave you a real enjoyable gaming experience. I wonder whether it was this new territory that was entered that made it so special or was it something else?
This was a massive part of it, I think. It came off the back of a massive obsession in gaming with WW2 shooters, of which COD2 was by far the best. I can still remember the trailer coming on Xbox Live for it and being blown away by how fresh it looked, particularly the bit with the dogs! The multiplayer was simple and satisfying. I actually think that since then, Treyarch have been by far the best online developers. World At War was brilliant online, Black Ops was good and Black Ops II is superb. Whereas Infinity Ward really dropped the ball with MW2; that was a heap of st online.I'm not sure what others think but I feel that it was the simplicity of the game that was its charm. Is CoD4 MW1 still very active online?
It sure is. I went back to it for a little while and whilst it remains my favourite (many an evening spent on there) it does now feel dated. On topic, I liked MW2 & MW3 alot, I even liked WAW but never really gelled with Black Ops and having played it a little more now I can't say I am a massive fan of this new instalment.
There are a few things I like (class customisation for one) but unfortunately the bad points outweigh the good for me at the moment.

I wish the battlefield series would bring out a new ww2 shooter based on bf3 engine. The old 1942 series was amazing. So much more fun flying old ww2 planes than going Mach 2 in an F18 over the map in 3 seconds.Dave_ITR said:

He he, damn right...I came out for lunch today (West coast USA) and once I could turn the phone on there was an email waiting on me "27 kills, woohoo", sounds like she's getting the hang of it now too...
She either means 27 kills overall or she is better than me.. Please be the former GC8 said:
Every new release is a step closer to Quake Arena or UT, which isnt what Im looking for at all, unfortunately.
^^^^ This exactly. The run around at 100mph routine has been done to death in literally hundreds of games, CoD4 was a nice departure from that but it seems it was a bit of an anomaly as every CoD released since then has been UT\Quake with different graphics and it doesn't even have the novelty of some of the more esoteric weapons\levels of those games. Basically we've seen it all before.Maybe I am getting old but I definitely think I am no longer the target audience for the CoD series and it's aimed at teenagers\kids who haven't got bored of playing twitch based shooters for the last 20 years.

Dave are you sure you don't mean MW2???? MW1 servers are off, I've just looked.
On Xbox? I've been on pretty recently and they were running, with plenty of people on to boot.
I'm on MW2 right now though, lots of games available.

Definately MW1, the servers were definately all present and correct last week. That's for the 360 anyway.
What does that mean? Have the hackers gone? If so I'm up for some of that.Graham & Blade give me a shout if you're up for some MW2... I'm never off it lol.
+1 for Pulse.
