Discussion
I was flying about in a system last night and noticed a location in the navigation tab called "CHECKPOINT". Never seen that before, maybe it's something brought in in one of the last couple of updates as a placeholder for some more content to be added later? I flew over for a look and found a few Federation Naval ships there and a navigation beacon but nothing else of interest.
I'm an idiot.
Found a nice little system in Imperial space, with a route between 2 systems that I can round trip in 8 minutes that nets Cr3000/t. Also got a well lit RES site in an adjacent system, so I can settle here (thinks I) and alternate between grinding the trade route and RES camping.
So I think I'll buy a T7, after all it's got nearly twice the capacity of an Asp so the credits will grind twice as quick. Wrong. The bloody thing is so much slower with such a short range that the round trip takes nearly twice as long. In terms of Cr/hr it's ahead of the Asp, but only just. And it is no fun to fly. With the 10% "hit" on selling the hull I need to play for several hours just to make back in additional profit when flying the T7 for the cost of selling it later.
Should have just stuck with the Asp (at least I didn't sell my old one).
I really, really dislike the T7 and with such a short range (even with a big FSD) it's pretty pointless.

OPERATION 'Battleship Kickass' begins tomorrow. The chase starts in earnest first thing Friday having equipped my Cobra specifically to hunt and destroy this low-life scum.
Weapon Loadout
Internal Loadout
Cargo to be given up on interdiction
Wish me luck!

You could but it would be a hell of a round trip to find enough of them. Remember each station that sells them has a cap on how many you can buy.I also made my way to Tenche last night and will start trading from there after work. Got about 6 mil saved up so I guess it is a T7 next.
Edit: Just read Phils comments on the T7 and not so sure now

Before buying a T7, do your sums and be aware it has a TINY jump capability, even with upgraded FSD. The T7 depends entirely on if you can use the cargo space without it's lack of speed dragging down the Cr/hour. It may be well suited for the Luxury Trading dropoff, that might be the only use case for it.I also made my way to Tenche last night and will start trading from there after work. The area I am in has 2 stations 18ly away, one station 16ls from the solar mass and the other 221ls. So, about as optimal a 2-way one-jump trade as you might find in the whole galaxy. I'm trading Palladium in one direction for +1720 and Imperial Slaves (I've become a filthy blackbirder in pursuit of profit) for +1280 in the other.
The Asp can do 128t in a 10 minute round trip, and it feels quick. 128t x +3000/t x 6 trips/hr = Cr2.3M/hour
The T7 with 212t (I fly this with a shield) takes 15 mins. 212t x +3000/t x 4 trips/hr = Cr2.54M/hour
So not much in it but the T7 is just sooooo boring to fly. And the T7 overheats at every opportunity and feels like a drag. And when the time comes to sell it, you lose Cr1.7M on the hull sale. So I'd need to grind for an extra 7 hours with the T7 to make back the cost of selling it.
Unfortunately, I didn't do these maths on my route before I bought the T7. So I've now bought and sold 3 of the damn things, at a cost of over Cr5M.
Thanks Phil, a good load of info. So if I have the money and this Tenche thing keeps going I might consider it for there, if not then I will go a different ship route.
How much do you lose when you sell a ship over purchase cost? Just wondering how much I might lose if I went for the T7 until Tenche dried up?

Another newbie checking in with a story of woe (or woeful incompetence)
Spent a few evenings sidewinder grinding away in Eravate to buy a hauler with a 15y laden range, so that I could finally head out to Leesti to make decent money on the small ship rare run to Tauri. 14 jumps later and two fuel stops later, i arrived at the starting point, picked up a load of cargo and headed out on the 19 jump, 220ly, 3 refuel trip. Managed to avoid 3 interdictions in my unarmed, lightly shielded little hauler and limped into the Tauri system with 50% hull...
...to find an almost empty system. There was supposed to be a major station just near the star?
Turns out i'd made a very slight navigational error - I'd flown to Taurina, not 39 Tauri. My first epic trading run missed it's target by a mere 140ly.
I don't think I'm cut out for this game.

10%You can sell modules back for full price though so sell those individually first, then when you do sell your ship it's only 10% of the hull price you lose. It's still a fair whack though.
I'm only playing an hour or two a week at the moment. Hope the luxuries runs don't get nerfed otherwise I will feel like I've missed out which is one of the things I was hoping E wouldn't do (unlike Eve or whatever which is apparently quite punishing to casuals).

Thank you. I had 10% in my head but wasn't totally sure. So a T7 just for Tenche and then sell it after that dries up would make sense. You can sell modules back for full price though so sell those individually first, then when you do sell your ship it's only 10% of the hull price you lose. Tempted to try Imperial Clipper
I wanted a Clipper too, they look awesome coming through the letterbox, but I can't figure out how to get the missions for permits. Can't visit Sol either http://www.fenris.co.uk/elite/federal-ranks/
is a link for ranks and what you need to do! I need to be ranked Baron to get a clipper and i'm only a squire atm and 2nd from top in the feds!

Yes, I'm thinking about getting a Clipper, that's why I'm in Imperial space and ranking up. For Cr22M and a ship that can carry 2 medium + 2 large weapons, looks pretty good.ash73 said:

The classic Sat-Nav error Hang in there, it's totally addictive and worth the effort. Hopefully when Wings comes out we'll be able to offer newbies some escort missions to get them a few rungs up the ladder.

Don't forget to sort power priority on your modules as you're currently overcommitted
Good luck!
Thanks Berz, I noticed it after the image was posted! I spent an hour so tooling round Lave taking on Wanted NPCs but he never showed up. Next stop is Altair according the net. Although I've since upgraded the Cobra to an Asp so I might need to do another couple of rares runs to get the ship up to spec first.Good luck!

Last night was a bit weird for my mate and I who play together. We both had warrants against us and neither of us could clear them. He then had a go at an Anaconda, it wiped out his Cobra in no time, yet it never fired on me in my Eagle. Took me about 5 minutes to kill with my single gatling gun thingy and twin lasers. I tried to claim the bounty on the Anaconda but it never registered at the space dock.Still have that wanted in the Aquilia 31 (or what ever it's called) system.
